Part of the fun in hearing music live is hearing the changes that are made on purpose or by accident. Keeps things exciting to say the least.

(1986) 16 years old drunk at a day party skipping school, my friend Jason and I, in the kitchen drinking, everyone else passed out. With a table full of cassettes and the 3 speaker boom box, Jason grabbed this cassette and jammed it in. First song, Disposable Heroes. Changed my life forever. This was another level we weren't ready for. The Production, The Musicianship, The Lyrics? It was so ahead of everything else we ever listened to at the time, we thought we were tripping! Next day, ran to the record store and bought it. Skipped another day, got drunk and stoned, listened to it and it was like discovering a secret world we didn't know about. We were born again disciples of the Metallica religion.

I will never get "You coward You servant You blindman" out of my head. He says it with contempt, like the officer is mocking the soldier for being afraid to go die just because he's told to. It takes so much empathy for someone who's never been to war to express the thoughts and feelings of people who have. This song doesn't glorify soldiers, it reflects the cynicism that can set in. It meets them where they are. I knew there must have been something more substantial for Metallica to have been so popular.

As a longtime Metallica fan who also happens to be a proud former US Army soldier who deployed multiple times to Iraq, I don't know how I feel about this song...
@KhasAdun1990
@KhasAdun1990 2 жыл бұрын
@@waynefontaine5533 I understand and respect that. Not to disagree, but I am curious about whether it affects your opinion of the song to consider that it was written about the Vietnam war. There was a lot more cynicism surrounding it, as it wasn't fought for personal reasons, but for geopolitical ones. Not long after arriving in Vietnam, soldiers learned for the first time that their government had been lying to them and the public about the reasons for and the state of the war. Not to mention the neglect and broken promises veterans suffered from both the government and the public after returning. I don't think this song would reflect your experiences or thoughts about being in the the Army, since it was written before the war in Iraq. Of course, there's nothing wrong with this simply not being your thing, but I wonder if it changes your perspective to consider who it's written for and about.

I am in a chair. I took my medicine for, "GlAcOMA 😉" sorry I'm rambling. I am damn near 50, Metallica was my 3 Concert ever. My first was AC/DC, 😊. I would not change the outcome. I loved most of my time in the military and don't regret my service. It allowed me to know good and bad in many places. Azzhattery is universal. Puff puff pass! I am a military brat, both fathers, brother in law, cousins and a nephew. But I also spent about 4 straight years researching PTSD/TBI in Iraq/Afghan vets and all that comes during and after deployment for them. Every. Day. I was on the road to starting a therapy animal non profit for Veterans... mainly pit bulls and parrots. lol Those four years were some of the most depressing years of my life after what I learned. I have never cried so much in a short amount of time. lol As a sufferer of PTSD myself (nearly died in a Tornado in 1997 while pregnant with my only child) as well as a parrot person (I have 7 parrots for almost 20 years) this endeavor was near and dear to my heart. To make a long story short... it feels funny to me now saying "Thank you for your service" because it couldn't possibly convey, personally, just how much appreciation I have for what one goes through having joined the military, sent to fight in a combat zone for certain reasons, arriving to find out it's not quite what you thought it was going to be, seeing the worst possible things a human can see, having to do some pretty horrific things, and having to come home and be expected to just compartmentalize it all and be normal. To be injured on top of that? A simple thank you seems patronizing and far too little. But know that people like me really do give a shit and appreciate all you sacrificed in serving your country as well as doing it for the reasons YOU did it. Not for what anything the government might have told you. I especially commend you for your accomplishments after you got home. Keep that Purple Heart hanging proudly... regardless of anything else, you earned it just by serving, in my opinion.

I think I was about 10 years old when I first listened to this album on cassette. I had never heard anything like it and it just blew me away.. glad to see it can still have the same effect.

I have been a Metallica fan for 31 years and it's great to see more people listening. The songs are very deep. Master of Puppets is my favorite album. Its definitely motivating music for running or lifting.

All these reactions brings a tear to my eye. I had those lyrics written all my wall in college 20 years ago ! in black sharpie. If you like the tune you gotta learn how to play it on guitar so much fun!

Anytime I hear these songs from 'Puppets" or any old 'Tallica-album, it is like a going into time machine and I'm a kid again, listening these songs for a first time like back in the 80's. These songs are part of my DNA 'till the day I'll die.

Add to all the music and lyrics from the album the fact that the band members were 21-22 years old when they created this masterpiece... Two years later, in 1988, the band released the 4th album "And Justice For All..... ...''. For me personally, their best album, regardless of the production where you can hardly hear the bass guitar. This is also the last album I listen to, because after the "Justice..." album, the "Black" album came out, which chased away old fans and got millions of new ones... James' lyrics are deep and make you think about the topics about which he sings. In addition, James is one of the best (if not the best) rhythm guitarist to ever play.

I guess that I was way ahead of my time with listening and understanding everything they jammed about back as 7th grader in 87 but then people thought I was crazy for straight living them . Then NWA come soon after & they gave me that same vibe of not taking shit from nobody! Music is what moves our soul & soul is what we truly are !

I grew up with my Mom exposing me to Hendrix, Zeppelin, etc.; I knew great rock. In 1987, my dad -found- a caseless faded cassette copy of Master of Puppets in a salvaged car, and gave it to me. I'd heard of Metallica, but never heard them once. Listening through that album was one of the most legitimately mind-blowing moments of my youth. (And of course, it instantly became my go-to workout tape!)

For those of you that aren't aware, metal music is structured the same as classical music , especially with Metallica, which is very evident during the later guitar solo, its why it translates so well, so much so, that they produced an album with the London Symphony Orchestra called S&M where they play back up for Metallica,( the main differences between the two genres, is of course instruments used, distortion and of course tempo)
