Class of 88 here. You might have been the only one on your side of the block, but in my part of Texas (Beaumont Texas is/was majority black), I turned plenty of my black homies to the "dark side" and they took to it quite well! Cheers man!

45 yr old white Canadian here and it's true everyone in high school that loved rock were what we called " Headbangers" or metal heads and I was one of them but we used to love it whenver we'd be at a party and there would be one black metal head with a leather jacket white high top sneakers and a slight fro seemed they all adopted the Jimi Hendrix look and we'd always want them at our parties. This song is the first on the album, so as this long intro played I'd be loading up the squat rack and sometimes I'd add just a little extra; I called it 'the Metallica effect'. I had an awkward moment in music class when teacher played a song from black album (don't remember anymore what it was) as an example for some musical stuff. Not only I was the only one headbanging the whole song but when he asked if it was good afterwards, I was so pumped that I bounced standing raising horns and yelled "fuck yeah!". Everyone except the teacher was looking at me like I'd lost it. Good memory.

I get the joke, but I find it a bit funny to talk about testosterone and male aggrsiveness, when the song is a condemnation of the biggest testosterone trip of them all: Military service, basically viewing soldiers as pitiful tools, who in their hunger for glory has been tricked into a life of servitude that will ultimately kill them, but they are too cowardly to say no.

Id have to agree on that. Every song is a gem. Its probably the pinnacle of what heavy metal will ever be. I just dont see how anything could possibly top it. I speak from a practical point of view. Not an emotional one. The album is in fact, quite perfect on every level.

Master of Puppets as an album is probably overall the BEST they've created as a cohesive unit. If you notice on the album cover, the hands at the top with strings leading down to the grave markers showing not only "Puppets", but essentially the song "Disposable Heroes" - "You will do, what I say, when I say - Back to the front!" This whole album is just epic.

It takes A LOT of work to play this song. The rhythm guitar, WORK. The epic solo, WORK. The drums, WORK. The creativity, WORK. It is one of the most hidden gems in all of Metal. I’ll never forget where I was when I first listened to this album, especially this song. I coulnd wait to attempt to play it on guitar and it wears me out EVERY TIME. Excellent video my friend.

I was a senior in High school when I saw them on the Justice tour in Weedsport. That outdoor concert was wild. I have seen nothing like it since. They were with Guns and Roses and no one even talked about GnR.

I was in the 7th grade when this came out. The "creepers" (the widely used and "accepted" name for the heavy metal clique. You know... Whitewashed Jeans, Jean jackets with led zeppelin and metallica patches... Etc) were freaking out. My friends, though not in that clique, listened to metal. So I listened to master of puppets with them. It blew my mind. It started with Battery....

Lol I saw them at the capital theater in passaic New Jersey 1985 touring for master of puppets. Metallica was the opening act for a head lined Ozzy tour. They played so heavy and fast that when ozzy came on stage, the crowd booed them off lol... Metallica came back out and played more after Ozzy. That was my introduction to Metallica live !!!!!

This album changed my life. I got this album as a freshman in HS. I played varsity basketball, varsity football (started offense, defense, special teams, played entire game) and ran track. I went immediately and got a guitar. Senior year, I quit sports and played in a metal band.
