The intro and outro music are a bit messed up/laggy and poppy. That was likely due to my computer issue. Apologies for that annoyance. I am upgrading the RAM tomorrow so this shouldn't be an issue going forward! What I learned with this piece: It's hard to single out any one thing I took note of in the process of making this video as it's not a "song". I already knew Neil Peart was one of the best drummers in the world, but I did not know just how much of a master he was with drums. Particularly at making all four of his extremities move at different times, in different patterns. A LEGENDARY musician and lyricist, lost too soon. I highly recommend: Thievery Corporation - "Le Monde": kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2HWe36Bbrepg6M

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

We lost Neil Peart on January 7th 2020 to brain cancer! Geddy Lee called him: THE PROFESSOR because he had a verbal and musical vocabulary that I would put against anyone including Beethoven and Albert Einstein all this from a guy who didn’t graduate high school! Not only was he the drummer-percussionist of RUSH but he also wrote the Lyrics! RIP PROFESSOR

I'm a drummer. (62yo) Played in bands, did some studio stuff. Been around some great musicians with good gear. (not garage band stuff) I get a kick out of people online who are supposed "pros", with drums in the background. I've heard a lot of drummers in almost 50 years of playing, but Peart is the greatest drummer BY FAR I've ever heard. I played hard rock in the day but grew up with my dads big band albums. Buddy Rich etc. Buddy, even with the ego he had, and how great he was, would have to tip his cap. Peart was given a gift. I truly believe that. Some people are just lucky that way. All of the practice in the world won't get you to his leveL. i my opinion, and experience, he really was the greatest drummer ever. And I've heard many. If someone can find one better I'd love to hear it.

Neil wrote about this particular performance in his book Roadshow, how he knew the Frankfurt concert was going to be taped and how he wished his playing had been better. He put so much pressure on himself in live performance, no wonder it wore him out. Yet an imperfect performance from him is an unattainable performance for the rest of us. His keeping three-four time with his feet while the hands do several completely unrelated patterns is itself a showstopper.

Crazy fact about this solo: Neil actually stated he was frustrated with this particular solo and wanted to either use the next night’s solo, or splice them together for the DVD. That just goes to show the level to which he held himself. THIS was an “off night” to him. Meanwhile, every other drummer on the planet would kill to have a night like that! This is why I continue to love Rush even long after they retired and disbanded.

Neil Peart was not only One of the GOATs, but he was humble enough during the early 90s to reinvent his drum style and re-learn his craft with some Jazz greats to get to where he wanted to be in his craft. How awesome is that - especially as an example to all who followed him, young kids coming up playing drums, and Rush fans in general - to be a GOAT and still turn around and go "I'm good but I know I can get/do better" getting better - to want to continue to learn his craft when he could have just sat at his pinnacle at the time and ridden that right out to the end.

For a "old" Rush fans like me, who know already from the early 80's that Rush, all their members and especially Neil Peart, were a band and musicians so special, with so much talent, and at the top position (already) of their instrument. And at the same time, if I declare this to the people around me, I was for them, "somebody coming from the planet mars". It's sweet for me to watch reactions of these people who discover for the first time a great musician like Neil Peart. It's true, it's amazing to see a solo (with so much parts!) so accomplish (after probably 40 years of solos). Just the first section is amazing! But it's not the end , there another part, an another part, an another and another... I think this Neil Peart solo's in Frankfurt, it's to much (and dangerous) for a novice. 😉 Start with the solo's in 1975 "All the World's a stage"

I suppose I've probably evolved a bit and just don't really stop to think about that a lot. I did go back and watch my first few reaction compilations and ... oh boy. 😅 I've definitely polished a few things and hope to keep improving. Thank you for being here.

I’ve listened to him and Rush since I was a kid, he’s just so far beyond. It’s not just technical skill, he creates his own atmosphere and anticipation of the next part.

Reactions brought tears to my eyes!...🥲 Sometimes It's difficult to remember how much you were affected after years & years of listening; and while in your subconscious you know; THIS was an IN-YOUR-FACE reminder in a HUGE way! Watching those uploaders who are seeing for the VERY first time!.. ..It's like...Welcome to the WORLD of Rush/Neil Peart , even though he has now left it! Where have you guys been?!? But, at the same time, THAT'S the BEAUTY of it!.. R.I.P. my Brother..THIS is DEFINITIVE PROOF that YOU & your legacy will, not only reach/influence the new, but LIVE on FOREVER!!! 🤘 🤩🤘

This hit me in the heart! Thank God I was able to see Rush live 2 or 3 times in my life. Some of the best shows I’ve ever been to in my life. There will never be anyone like Neil. This video was great, but seeing it live was on a whole different level than I have ever experienced before.

I remember Buddy Rich from his many appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I thought he was fantastic. I shared that thought with my cousin who is a very humble man. He is a musician who started playing drums and guitar after the Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan in 1964. I went back to see him play drums at various clubs in the early 70s, with Wipeout being his standout performance. I spoke to him recently about Buddy Rich and Keith Moon. He reacted very negatively about both of them. I was very surprised. I didn’t know how to respond about Buddy Rich but I did with Keith Moon. I brought up “I Can See for Miles and Miles” that put me in sonic nirvana with Pete Townsend’s soaring guitar complementing Moon’s all out attack on his kit. I didn’t even bother to bring up “Happy Jack”. My cousin and I can talk on the phone for hours about music. I have learned not to talk about drummers. He does like Ginger Baker, go figure;)

RUSH: MASTERS OF TIME SIGNATURES: They don't sit down and say "Let's write in (x) time signature." They just write what they feel. Jacob's Ladder alternates between 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4, then 6/8 and 7/8. Limelight is 7/4 not 7/8. The middle of La Villa (A Lerxst in Wonderland) is in 7/8. Kid Gloves is in 5/4 for the intro and verses and 4/4 for choruses. The Trees starts in 3/4, moves into 4/4 and the solo section is 5/4.

NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD: There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know! That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall. I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot! A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air. Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice! Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom. We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well. If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done. YYZED: I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.

I have to say I got very emotional as well. This man has produced and played so many wonderful "emotions" . For what he has gone thru in his life. The loss of his daughter and his wife ;to then getting cancer and passing at such a young age! May God rest your beautiful soul Neil!🥹

2 things- 1) GOD GIVEN TALENT! & B) A work ethic, thousands of hours of REAL ACTUAL WORK & practice- He was taking lessons in jazz & swing in his 40s & 50s that he was open about but very few ppl actually knew! That work ethic is very seldom seen anymore in any field
