My thoughts only - WKW is in love with romantic fatalities. His movies about love are never about love itself but the slow swelling of longing, loneliness and desire, with the unfinished endings to the love stories being more beautiful than the love itself. The suffering and punishment of love eclipsing or giving itself the definition of the actual love in the stories. Its great for art, and i do like his stuff but his stories are never about love for what it really is.

What about the melancholic theme that resurfaces throughout the film? That in itself tells the story more deeply than what is portrayed on screen....

@@milinlim5211 Like it or not. With all of Hong Kong past economical and cultural success were not given by the mainland China. Hong Kong would not have succeeded and became one of the major trading hubs in Asia pacific area if it were not backed by the British Empire. And WKW films from the early 90s to late 90s depicted the charm and beauty of the unique culture of Hong Kong from the 60s to late 90s. That is the Hong Kong that many people around the world know and loved.

@@milinlim5211 Oh would you like me to remind you what your mainlanders were busying back in the 60s? Your grandparants either busy killing their own folks or busy following orders blindly! How about the 70s? You folks were starving under the rule of Mao. You mainlanders started to open up during the 80s while Hong Kong has already achieved so much. We Hong Kongers would never be part of the mainland in minds and spirit because we have learned to think for ourselves. We are allowed to mingle with anyone from different parts of the world.
