In truth, in the original novel, the oompa loompa were a race of pygmies. When the production of the film was announced, the N.A.A.C.P. did not like the stereotype. Dahl understood, so he changed the pygmies to an orange race. That is the ONLY change I can understand.
@PriceofReason9 ай бұрын
I can understand that change too and honestly, I really like what they did with the Oompa Loompas in the 1971 movie.
@VexElectronica9 ай бұрын
I agree with your statement that this will leave no big impact or influence. Thankfully, this won't sully the character in the long run but I'd like to see Hollywood adapt more of Dahl's other works. Cheers POR!
@PriceofReason9 ай бұрын
Thanks Vex! Yes it was a very forgettable movie with too many songs and too little story. I would be happy to see Dahl adaptations but hopefully made by more competent people.

I keep forgetting how many prominent black chocolatiers there were in Europe in what seems to be the early 1900's 🤣 I also love how many people like to peg the eurocentric model as problematic. Yet....here we are in the casting.

So, personally, I don't mind remakes if the 'message' isn't too pushed or it actually makes sense. An example would be: like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland! With the first movie of her not wanting to marry that awful man, it made sense; or grandly disliking corsets since in her personal opinion they were uncomfortable. But with #2 while I still loved it, the whole 'Alice is a captain' was such a stretch it ruined the beginning of the movie for me. Yes the messaging was a bit heavy handed in Alice but-unlike Wonka, like you pointed out- it wasn't a sledgehammer to me. And I actually think Timothy Chalamet isn't a bad actor but I despised him in the new Dune (please don't shoot me...I'm a fan of the uncut OG scy-fi channel version which I have on dvd and recorded haha). This movie, however, really highlights that Chalamet can indeed act and he's good at this kind of role. I just didn't care for anything else. It was....not a good musical in my opinion and I LOVE musicals. I also absolutely agree. Chalamet is NO Gene Wilder..There shall never be another Gene. RIP
@PriceofReason9 ай бұрын
Chalamet is ok for very specific roles but I didn't think he did anything special here, or in Dune for that matter.

I respect your opinion but can't agree with it. I went to the cinema not expecting anything, actually even less than that, but it was honestly such an enjoyable movie. Me and my friend loved it, it brought the right amount of nostalgia and I really enjoyed the hidden references to the older movie. It also gave a sense of forshadowing for the actions of the older Wonka in the original movie, which was sweet. People don't go to the cinema for any movie in my country but for this movie, the theater is still full two weeks later, which never happens. If anyone is interested in watching this I recommend giving it a shot. Many people and critics found it a good watch which is a rarity nowadays.

It’s important to me that the lead actor here remain at least a passable, if not-yet-excellent Paul Atriedes in Dune. Hence I avoid all other material he’s in, including interviews, and even this video. (I’m listening, but not watching). I don’t want to be thinking about his (undoubtedly stupid) politics when I’m experiencing what’s probably the greatest sci fi story of all time. You just HAD to mention he dates a celebutard…. My fault for clicking on his face. Thanks for the video!

Sad thing is in another universe Charlamet would have made for a pretty good flash/Barry Allen over Ezra Miller. I agree Price he isn't a bad actor and I think he has talent and he's likable on-screen but this role just wasn't right for him, he's a little too understated or soft spoken without that rascal like edge to him. Great review as always.

Haven't seen the movie, but once you said it features lots of new original music a wave of dread swept over me. I can just hear the new songs - a collection of bouncy, quirky, melody-free contraptions engineered to evoke Elfman and Sondheim. Oh joy.

I just wish that this sort of project didn't get past the green light stage if there's clearly nothing to be added to the original, it's a clear tedious cash grab. Even Depp couldn't pull this off, what were they thinking?

They were hoping some young ladies would enjoy seeing Chalamet and sadly, the more poor may have even worked

I rather liked it. Yeah, it's not going to go down as a movie of 'significance' but after the disappointment of Napoleon and gothic 'Talented Mr Ripley' impersonator that was Saltburn it was a breath of fresh air.

I'm personally a fan of musicals, so i would have given this a chance if you didn't go into detail about the story. The white man stealing from natives along with race swapped slugworth reeks of woke nonsense. Also them replacing a potential little person actor with a cgi dwarf, was idiotic. I honestly should've expected it. I wont be seeing this film.
