I'm curious why so many of the buildings in Japan have crawlspaces underneath the bottom floor. Take this shed for example. You could save material and time by building the floor directly on the concrete slab. The building could be less tall and have the exact same interior space as well. Is it required by the building codes in your area?

Japan has very hot, humid summers. The crawlspaces keep houses/buildings well-ventilated, helping prevent the frame from getting wet and/or rotting.

Does anyone know how this design works regarding ventilation and humidity? Doesn't it need vents? Or does this specific method negate those issues? I would think condensation would build up and cause issues, but perhaps I am missing something.

@@cmmartti Ieah I think I remember seeing the Joto vent under the sill in the previous video, but i'm still curious about how the ceiling will not collect moisture. My neighbor built a shed similar to this, and right after he installed foam insulation in the rafters water was collecting and dripping down from above.. He did have a gable vent on each side, i think that is it. If the insulation was just above the ceiling, and not in the rafters would that be an issue? Thanks.

Polystyrene is not fully cured upon being sold and will retract the following months: panels won’t fit so snuggly relatively soon. With high winds, over a couple of years, some to many will just stand loose in the wall cavities and you can no longer call that ‘insulation’. The proper way to install rigid insulation is to seal its perimeter (with a continuous bead) behind to prevent convection that otherwise makes it inefficient). Once in place, you use scrap wood to secure insulation against the interior side of the sheathing, permanently. If I observed correctly, the floor is not insulated and the roof is insulated with the same U-factor as the walls? That is also bad. You will tell me: ‘that’s just a shed’ and maybe that’s fair. However people are observing what you do and will apply your insulation methods where they will create problems. Just as you proceed with carpentry, you do it (quite seriously as I can see) or you don’t.

This shed is built better than 99% of all American houses. Here, people consider fake window shutters as something special, and the price of the house increases if you have this garbage on your windows. Sad.
