That was WONDERFULLY informative video Kent! I’m very new to wood turning I’ve only been at it for maybe a month and I love you content. I especially like how you keep stressing that if you are less advanced, don’t worry and stop when you feel comfortable. You can always just sand it. But then you show the more advanced techniques. I am and have been a professional photographer for over 30 years. Most of my career was spent working for newspapers. Now I am a marketing photographer. I love your videos! I am learning on KZbin. I struggle and not turned a bowl since high school. Thank you for inspiring me to try again. I have always had a passion for turning on a lathe, and at 54..almost 55 now. I beat cancer and bought myself a jet 1221vs and more tools shown on youtube than I would ever need. Kent, I blew up a small bowl this afternoon by first not watching this vid on how to remove the tenon. Other turners use a Japanese type pull saw to saw the tenon off and some turn the tenon off like you do. This project had about 1 1/2 hours into it and I wanted to try the Cole chuck jaws as mounted to my Nova chuck. Things were going good until the bowl jumped out of the Cole jaws and shattered into about 10 pieces. After thinking about it, I discovered one of the jaws had loosened a bit plus I didn’t use the correct grippers. So thank you for this great vid and demonstrating proper techniques. I’m looking forward to trying this again real soon. BTW, I’m saving the pieces as a reminder...........

I’ve been turning bowls for about 2 or 3 months and just finished my first bowl (I have about 8 rough turned green wood bowls waiting to be dry enough to finish turn.) Anyway I used a very similar technique to finish my dry walnut bowl. It was recommended I use a vacuum chuck, but I ended up using the vacuum chuck much like the jam chuck technique you demonstrated (I just didn’t feel like the vacuum chuck was secure enough!) It worked out well and I did, much as you demonstrated, make a hollowed bottom (but no real foot.) I’m glad to see that what I was doing makes some sense to a seasoned wood turner (although it possibly isn’t the best way to treat a vacuum chuck?) I guess now that I’ve heard of it, I’ll need to make myself a jam chuck to use in the future!

When I was in junior high school I had a great teacher in my woodworking class. We had wood lathes that I loved to work with. Our teacher was fantastic working with kids and would do anything to help us. I made lots of bowls and other great projects that he helped inspire. After a bunch of years, I've finally gotten a great used lathe and want to get back into the hobby. Re: removing the tenon. Yes Kent, I use the pretty much the same method as you do. Except I convert the shoulder into a smaller band (which becomes a new foot, or base). I then remove the center entirely. I also round and smooth that new base. Looks really clean and well finished. I also see that you use the same "unique method" I often use. That's when "yousneak up" on your cuts. Ahem! Best regards. Wayne

Love these videos. This is only my 2nd video. I started turning bowels about 2 years ago. I am a retired machinist and love making things. I started by gluing scrap 2x4s and a friends old scrap mahogany table top in vertical layers then turning. After watching just these 2 videos from Kent it a wonder my bowels and vases and I survived. It’s my faithful Cole jaws or vacuum Chuck for me. Perhaps you could demonstrate for the learners how to create and use an expansion Chuck method. It’s my favoured route. I’m 62 years old and have been turning for over 40 years. I still love watching other turners like yourself on utube. You never stop learning eh. It’s just a little side note but in this video and others you have made, you have moved the tool post and rest while the lathe was running. Don’t take me wrong but if beginners watch you do it, they may do the same with potentially painful results. I love your videos, You explain the processes extremely well. All the very best all. This video is worth watching just for the explanation of why one should create a large foot: to give stability to the bowl while turning. Hah! This might reduce chatter on the inside of thin-walled bowls. But there are many other reasons as well. Excellent work, Kent!

First bowl done quite nicely and all finished with Tried and True. Just have to turn tenon off and shape the foot, so I’m referring to your techniques again this morning. 6” dia x 2 1/4” tall with foot 🦶 Pushed my limit with thinner than 1/4” sides (hard maple twice turned). The last part helped me with an issue I have been having since I went from a JET mini to a JET 12-21. Sounds like a small step up but I went to buy a full size chuck the salesman claimed the G3 I had would handle any bowl I turned. I like live edge bowls and make the biggest bowls I can. I keep getting vibrations and even chatter towards the top lip of the bowl. My tools are kept sharp but these bigger bowls obviously need a bigger tenon. I learned this from your video. I think the salesman didn't feel like getting out of his chair. Thank you.

Great job, Kent! The foot is a difficult area for me personally. Advanced turners always look at the foot when evaluating a bowl and there’s nothing like learning from the best. Thank you so much. As to what I learned in this video, I learned that you need a large tenon in the early stages of turning a bowl but the ultimate foot or bottom needs to be reduced to give a more elegant finished product.

Fantastic video. I’m just getting started in turning. Just bought my second lathe. My first lathe my neighbour gave me and I figured out very quickly it was not meeting my needs. My next investment is to get some quality tools. I have ordered a 1/2 inch bowl gouge and tenon tool. All the old tools I have are for spindle turning. I’ve also purchased a VM 120 chuck.

That trick, (use your thumb and the tool rest), to center up your bowl on the jam chuck and take out the wobble gave me an answer I’ve been looking for since I started turning. THANK YOU!

Love your videos! I've always stopped after I get nub to 3/4" round, then chisel off. The combination of the detail gouge and nibbling away with the lathe off at the end is a great safe way to end the turning. Thanks Kent!

Just a great method, skill over hardware. This is the way I have been doing it, but.....but....I was not getting quite as refined, doing more off lathe work to clean it up. You have taken it to a much higher level, I am inspired to improve. I was about to make a donut chuck for bottom finishing. All I need now is to bump up some practice. The simple method is always the best. This is faster than gizmos, and much more enjoyable. Thank you for your excellent video.

Wonderful, thanks for reducing my stress. I thought I would just leave the tenon and tell myself this is my new style. Now I think I can remove the tenon with less worry. As usual, I like your approach and method of bowl turning.
