Yes, I forgot to talk about the air intake. I simply drilled holes in the door. Later, I added a flap because sometimes the stove would backfire a little. It's visible in the thumbnail.
It's not my first stove build either. This is my 6th wood burner build in my life. I guess I should have mentioned that in the video, too. If you watch my channel regularly, you will see I have a wood burner I built in my house, and I had one I built in the "man cave." 2 of the 6 builds were "water jacketed" wood burners for pumping hot water into a home for heat.
It would be nice to be a bit warmer in the garage, I love wood hear, so I decided to build a small wood burner.

I built a couple of stoves,they worked as good as anything I could have bought.I got a big one made out of a seventy-five gallon water tank off a concrete mixer.The weather is getting colder and I will start it up as I have for many years.I built this stove back in the seventies.

Notice, unlike commercially built Square stoves, a ROUND stove will NEVER need Firebrick, to keep the corner welds from cracking. Round stoves heat more evenly & can even glow every night & never crack their welds, all the while putting out more heat for a given volumetric size. If you put a Baffle in front of the exhaust outlet, It'll burn even more efficiently.

That's a fine stove, even more so because you used what you had instead of buying materials. The legs look especially good, quite stylish too. Excellent door too, and those repurposed tools finished it off really well.

Yep, building with new just doesn't create that same satisfying feeling. :) I did forget to talk about the air intake in the door in this video, I just put a few holes in the door with a flap. I think I want to change that to something adjustable... one of these years.

Needs a baffle to get some re-burn and slow the heat going up vent pipe by re-directing it to the front then up and back to the vent. You could also get a lot more heat recovery from the exhaust pipe in many different ways....but nice build all the same. I'm a cheap skate and want to keep as much as the btu's as possible and burn my firewood as slowly as possible but obviously above the temps that build amounts of creosote. I build stuff from junk all the time as well....i like the character of stuff that works in its present life differently that its former life but in fact still preforms a useful function.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. Worst part is all the controls were junk so I wired both blower up independent. You can tell they made it so that a power failure would smother it as all the air comes through the draft blower. Plus you almost can’t feed it enough wood to keep the air handler running full time. I’m not sure I’ll sweat it too much as I don’t generally run it unless I’m there to feed it and keep an eye on it. I’m far enough south it’s generally not terrible temp wise. I really enjoy watching all the stuff you build as well as the scratch built tools. Take care!

@morgansword
@morgansword 5 жыл бұрын
I built a few wood stoves over years and when I used pipe for a stove, I made them standing up with about four to six inch legs on the bottom and the door is about two thirds the way up to have a head above the door. That way I could use a lot of variables for heat but primarily wood. I know it ain't right but my stove my rules so any greasy rags that accumulated I stored outside in a vented area where my scrap steel was at and they got used up or burnt on purpose because in a pile where ever stored they will "build" their own fire from spontaneous combustion. that flat tom had a iron kettle on top always with it full of water cause I just don't like bloody noses especially in winter months, cause up here in Alaska the air is pretty dry. I guess I stuck my own nose into a fair amount of fights when I was a kid and then if I tripped over my own feet I made contact with something on the way down.... want to hear the rest of my own stupid mistakes growing up???? Well I was a boxer in the army an my nose was fair game to just about anyone in the ring and ducking was something I never really got the hang of/LOL. Anyway you just about never had to measure anything you planned to burn and when I could make it back to the house in the wee hours of morning mostly, I'd chunk some healthy sized wood in it with knots or somewhat wet and it would hold the fire overnight. I always would open the stack it the morning when I come in to burn the creosote out which I had real thick pipe for the chimney and it was also rapped with asbestos so the heat didn't get the nearest anything on fire. Of course my roof was steel also. I like your stove and only thing it needs is a place for the coffee to set. Enjoyed the video and I miss my wood stove

Nice stove idea. I think I would have opted to go vertical so it takes up less room, can be be loaded from the top and put and ash grate in the bottom with a trap door for emptying and lighting up. Just an idea not a ctirisism. If I ever get my own place again I will make a workshop fire and video it too!

didn't you consider making dumping doors on the bottom and some metal bar grate to keep the wood from directly touching the bottom wall also how abour efficiency of that thing? does it have enough surface area to radiate all the heat or most of it is going out trough the chimney? if the later part is true you can plumb it to a water jacket made out od copper pipes wraped around and put that water to some old trucj radiator . it would look ugly but it could give out much more heat given bigger surface area plus it woyld be safer to tauch because it would be colder on the surface

Thats a nice stove job! But brother U gotta have Air flow! A stove wont function properly if it can't get air from the door to make ur smoke draw up the chimney! U should cut some (Dime) size holes in ur door about 1 1/2" -2" inches up from the bottom of the door! Then put a slider piece of metal U can slide to open & close the draft holes. Then weld a 1-2 inch piece of channel metal under ur slider vent....This is to catch any small piece of fire that could fall out of ur draft holes & keep the fire embers from hitting the floor. It really is a Super Nice looking barrel Wood Heater. But U gotta have a draft Vent & about 1 1/2"- 2" inches off the bottom of your door is where it needs to be! If U run that stove that way it wont burn efficiently & it wont draw up the chimney like it should without air to push it up & out better. Note: Fire has to have air to burn. I hope this Tip helps U. 👍

where is the damper in the front of the stove?? Not much air gonna get in there to burn your wood very good.. Use a pipe cap and a bolt/nut and drill a few holes in that door behind where you put the pipe cap at the bottom of the door for the air to get in and you got it done!!!

Well done ! , however I think you will need more air coming into your fire on the door a adjustable damper ! the main thing that compels me to comment is your installation of the stove.... the big piece of steel toward the wall is well and good but nowhere enough to keep the wall from charing or catching on fire i know this from experience ! I later discovered a reasonable cure to the problem. I used aluminum roofing tin Up the wall in 2 layers separated about 2" from each other so air can move between them. when you get your wood stove Red hot all the way around and really cooking good, take a lazer thermoneter and check your wall wood temp behind the steel plate and you will be cooling it down with a sprey bottle of water before it ignites ! steel does not protect the wood that much , Aluminum will it conducts heat much faster, but you need 2 or 3 layers to protect the wall.... believe me I know Bob.....

thundersnowstorm. Yeah you are right. I told him to drill dime size holes & put a Metal slider to slide over the holes to open & close & adjust his air flow with. I also told him to weld a 1"-2" piece of angle iron across under the slider to catch any little pieces of fire that may fall out of the dime size air holes! Then he could close the vent some leaving a little hole open at night. Then while he sleeps or is away he wont have to worry about a piece of ember that may fall out the hole & burn his home down. Because it would just fall in the angle iron get trapped & die out! Right ? 😉 👍
