How to make wood inlay banding the easy way. This KZbin woodworking video focuses on a simple way to make an elegant & decorative wood inlay banding of maple & walnut. The two contrasting hardwoods create a striking design that can be inlaid into furniture, jewelry boxes, pictures frames, and much, much more.
Beginning woodworkers as well as experienced craftsmen can watch the video and quickly learn how wood inlay banding can be easily made on the band saw. The technique for making wood inlay banding on the band saw using cross cut sleds is an idea conceived of and developed by The Apprentice and The Journeyman. Feel free to use this woodworking method when you decide to make your own wood inlay banding.

Very good observation! You will notice that blue tape is used during the laying of the first course of segments. The adhesive side is up to receive the first course. The segments are laid onto the tape. As a result, these segments are in place and will not shift. It's important in order to keep the overall pattern in alignment. 1.) Just glue and clamp the segments at this time. 2.) When the glue has set then come back and add the outer veneer. Glue & clamp again. 3.) Repeat on other side.

Thank you for making these videos! your insight into making such pieces is very helpful. I personally am quite fond that you do not try to explain everything - letting the work show itself. Keep up the great work!

My friend, you understand exactly what my intentions are when I am making these woodworking videos. If you allow yourself the time to relax & watch the videos you will understand the process that I am sharing with you. I would rather have you think for yourself rather than me explaining every step to you. Talking can often be a distraction. The process is quite simplified in these videos. Just watch, enjoy, and learn.

I noticed you add the long strip at the end instead of just building all the small pieces on top of it. Is it better hat way for some reason? Great video!

Listen carefully. This is about as loud as I get. :) The band saw sleds (jigs) are very important. You can watch videos of the build process for these sleds on my KZbin Channel. You will also find a lot of information on my woodworking blog, The Apprentice and The Journeyman. A word of advice based upon experience.... Avoid the multi - function temptation for these sleds. (although Swiss Army knives are great) Build a dedicated sled for each angle. Keep it simple. Keep learning...Bob

The glue used for the wood inlay bandings is a white glue. It is Elmer's Glue All. It is a slow set glue that dries clear. This white glue is very adequate for the gluing of wood inlay banding segments and also very good when the actual inlay is performed. Titebond Extend will work fine. However, it cost twice as much as Elmer's Glue All. Based upon my experience, the white glue does the trick. Thanks for your interest & question. Stay tuned for more woodworking & wood inlay banding videos.

Thank you for watching and commenting. Very good question!...A 1/2 inch Wood Slicer resaw blade is used for slicing the thick pieces and thin inlay. The blade can be ordered from Highland Woodworking. You'll be happy with it.

Primetuple... Yes, I do glue both sides of of a joint. Why? It's a personal choice because I want to make sure that the joint is securely bonded. By coating all surfaces with fresh glue I know that my well cut joints will bond. It's a matter of working with confidence. In my videos you will always see me coat the entire joint (except in cases of where wood movement is a concern.) "this means a lot of fumbling with a brush." Applying glue is not difficult. Thanks for asking & watching.

Nice! Thanks for making this! It would have been even better if you'd briefly described/explained each step...maybe 10 words max, per step. Hope this suggestion is helpful! Good luck with your channel!

I absolutely LOVE every single one of your videos...I have spent enough hours watching your videos to feel as I know you personally...but we've never heard a peep out of you. Anyways, another great video from you...Can you tell me which band saw blade you use for your re-sawing...both thick pieces...and thin inlay.

I see you always apply glue to both sides of a joint, even when this means a lot of fumbling with a brush. Did you have unsatisfying results with one-sided application? Love your work & videos btw.

Could someone explain to me please, the reason for using the tape in between the two woods in the glueing up stage. I've heard of people using linen/cloth/canvas material when making their own Laminate work. (Something to do with increased strength whilst reducing the chance of the layers splitting.) All in all though....A great video to watch. Thank you for sharing.

Stuart Parr I use a clear plastic tape between the cauls and wood inlay banding that is being glued up. Doing so prevents the caul from being glued to to the project.

Great instructional video. At the beginning and end of the video I see a blue rockler guide/fence. I'd like to know what it is called so I can find it on their website. Thanks for your input and expertise.

Love all your videos, especially the banding ones. Wanted to ask what type of glue you are using - and if you thought Titebond Extend (slow set) would be good / better? Thanks
