Good to see you back priming and sealing all of the end grain. You are absolutely correct to seal the ends before installation. Almost all failures I see are due to the end grain of boards and trim not being sealed. Water just wicks in and is drawn up and into the wood.

Wow, I have been following your work and found this to be a treat... "On the Build Show!" kept on playing in my head. LOL. And you look much younger here too. You have been providing us homeowners and DIYers lots of help so I want to say Thank You Matt. I am just getting into my project, in Toledo Ohio... and I am in a historic district so that makes it more to do than standard. My fun is about to begin again. See you on another episode of your show.

In this house we used 1/2" CDX plywood for sheating then wrapped the house with Tyvek Drainwrap. OSB would be an acceptable substitute for plywood, but Hardiplank sheets would not work as it's not rated for shear value. Best, Matt

Thanks buddy! This house was always at that level. The original brick piers were in decent shape but the structural engineer had us put a concrete "shoulder" around the perimeter beams as well as a structural metal "x" bracing for lateral strength. We will stucco over those metal studs for a traditional stucco skirt. -Matt Risinger

HAHA! I found you with a stache :D This is what i was looking for kinda, since my home was 1925. back in 2012 though, so much has changed. Ive been doing this for two weeks now on my current 1925 house too, no insulation, termite damage, 2 layers of siding, one shakes with lead paint, then removing the old planks for sheathing back then(nightmare, so many nails) and then new mineral wool went in each studbay (none uniform distances so all custom cut to fit) and then zip sheathing/tape/tape/tape, prosecco liquid flash where I could, exterior 1" mineral wool, coravent, and fiber cement with azek trim for window trim and sills (OMG EXPENSIVE) and also for the corners. oh man....just build a new house instead LOL

woah, this is when you changed over to no stache at 5 minutes from here to current day :)

I'm sorry to hear about your siding failure. Yes this method I described would have prevented that failure. If you re-do your siding be sure to do a top notch WRB (weather resistive barrier), then your wood on rain screen as described in the video will set you up for many decades of beautiful wood siding. Matt Risinger

That's beautiful siding. Personally I would finish only with linseed paints or quality linseed oil

Helpful. I have a bad gutter when i bought the house. The siding and backing wood is shot from water and ants. Layers are backer wood, wrap, foam, screen, then new siding.

What do you use under the starter course to prevent bugs from nesting in the space between the siding and rigid foam? I think coravent has a screened spacer.

Hi Matt,great video.We remodeled our house in 1997 and the original house was built in 1947.The siding was redwood v-groove.It overlaps to create an inter-locking system but all you see is the v-groove joints.The framing contractor talked me going with pine v-groove to save money.He nailed them directly to the sheathing.Its been a disaster.Many of the boards are caving in because of moisture and perhaps rot?Now its attracted termites.Would this have been prevented had we used the rainscreen? Thx
@shanek65826 жыл бұрын
What do you put on the very bottom of the siding? Is the bottom of the rain screen exposed so it can drain? Seems like it would allow bugs a place to enter behind the siding, it there a screen type deal to allow water to fall out but not allow insects to go up behind the siding? Thanks.

Thanks for the good videos. Do you have any videos on Hardie board type siding? I will soon install cement siding, and have done it once before, but the walls that I am putting the siding on this time have some dips in the sheathing (1/8-3/8 inch). Do you know the minimum the wall can be off the chalk line and not need to be shimed out so that the siding still looks straight? Do you have an opinion on using Tyvek house wrap vs some off brand such as Rex Wrap (made by Warehouser)? Thank you, KC

+Brice Madden great question. You'll want a head flashing that runs through to the outside.
@bricemadden57177 жыл бұрын
that makes sense, but unlike a normal flashing, i assume it has to run underneath the rain screen, correct? normal flashing is just behind the siding......
@clownisius7 жыл бұрын
Matt has done newer videos on how he does flashing above and around windows, especially above windows. The flashing goes all the way to the sheathing and goes out from that. He even repaired a home that he took over as contractor, it's there, watch and enjoy all his videos.

how did you do the top of your windows? what nails did you use to for the rainscreen?

kalochalin There is a big metal custom flashing for the window heads. We are usually just tacking the rainscreen battens with small nails then the siding is screwed to the studs with long screws.

So what would be a good detail to use for a shingle house? You certainly can't do a moisture gap behind the shingles the way you can for clapboard siding. Probably a product like Benjamin Updike Rain Slicker. BTW, you look better without that thing over your upper lip.
@kirkellis43295 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you just use strips of 1/2 EPS rigid foam instead of the Corrugated plastic ? Cheaper and neither one is structural anyway. Did you need it to be less compressible than the EPS would have been ?

@ccr83925 жыл бұрын
Considering that it has the airspace and that it's going to be vented through the bottom and the top, what is the likelihood of water getting behind the styrofoam now? I mention this because of the paper being crinkled or being just the regular Tyvek. I don't think it would matter what type of paper would go behind it considering that if some water did get behind the wood, I highly doubt it would get behind the styrofoam at all. Just a thought...
@timwerner76205 жыл бұрын
The 'Stucco Wrap' would allow any condensation that got behind the insulation to migrate out. It's basically the same detail as an EIFS system but the top coat is wood siding instead of stucco. Clever idea.

If you can use polyiso foam instead, they don't use blowing agents that adversely effect the environment. It also performs great - 1" has an R-value of 6.5. Also, consider 2 layers of 1" at least to overlap seams. Use a good building tape on all seams. See GreenBuildingAdvisor.com. Constructive critism aside (no pun intended), I really admire your attention to detail and respect for the building's original architecture. Time consuming work - great to have a client who appreciates it and has the money to invest.
