I dont know much about wrapping. But do people put this stuff over top the older built homes ie bungalows that have those stucco? how would you layer it for old houses with stucco on the exterior? in example do people put paper down--> wooden frame---> styrfoam insulation---> plastic siding? I'm a total noob any ALL OF THIS STUFF. Looking to learn more before getting a friend to do this in the near future on my dads house. maybe in 2-3 years from now. I also live in Alberta Canada so it can go down to Negative -40 degree C which is -104 F
@Carpenters_Canvas4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffd3147 if your going to go over stucco you need to put wooden cleats on the building kinda like studs on the side of the house that you can then mail the siding to , obviously there is a lot of other things you need to do in preparation . Some window manufacturers (Vinylguard in Canada) have a extended brick mould that allows for up to 2" insulation. This sets the actual thermal glass into the wall and not on the exterior of the wall. They also have optional jamb extensions for the inside allowing it to be flush with drywall.

You are one of my favorite channels to follow for home improvement projects. I'm actually running into the similar situation, i have 1" rigid foam and building up 1" buck around the opening where we can install window (nailing fin) on the top it looks like perfect solution, this way the foam will be flush with the fin. The only question is when reviewing the code and installation instructions it says: "Embedment must be a minimum of 1 1/4" into the structural framing" So is the 1" buck counts as the "framing" since technically it is 'outside' of the wall framing? My window depth is 3.25" that leaves 2.25 before the fin minus the sheeting 0.75" which leaves 1.5" embedded into the frame (2x4) If we build the buck 1" out, that will technically leave the window only 0.5" inside the frame (2x4)

@bcoldwell13 жыл бұрын
I had the same question. You now have a vapor barrier inside behind you gyp, on the warm side, and with the xps, you have added another vapor barrier. Kind of possible to "trap" any vapor moving from warm to cold. There is - I have heard - a rule of thumb about what % of you R value can be outside the housewrap, vs on the warm side. I'm doing the same as done here, so need to figure it out. Roxul is vapor permeable, so isn't an issue I don't think.
@Faruk6513 жыл бұрын
This is why it is not a good idea to use XPS foam (like the one used in this video) on the exterior side of the house. Instead you should be using EPS styrofoam. Because eps foam will not trap vapor.
@Faruk6513 жыл бұрын
There are EPS styrofoam sheets that has channels on the back side which helps air movement and ventilation. Durock has Puccs Styroams as an example.

No not really, it is not in contact with the ground and really should not get wet often and if it does should easily dry out. If you use treated wood then be sure your nails/screws are ok to use with treated lumber and you would have to use copper or some kind of vinyl at the electrical service because metal or aluminum should not be in contact with PT wood. Here's on for you (and any other builders). I want to 100mm EWI my house with a render finish on the ground floor and vertical hanging wall tiles on the first floor. How on earth can I hang literally tons of vertical tiles upstairs securely? Any advice appreciated

If it is tongue and groove Pink Board, installed vertically, should we still use tape? AND, should the pink board be installed Vertically or Horizontally? Anyone? Thank you.

Would you suggest using spray foam in the corners to help adhere the foam most at risk of being blown off?

You can but you can also throw in a few extra fasteners.

Im going to be doing this to my house from 1920. The toung and groove sheething is not as reliable as i would like it to be . Can i go over it with 3/4 inch osb, or plywood, in order to have have something secure to screw into. Or would i have to remove the old sheething and start from the beams?

Great video Shannon. Waiting for warmer temperatures to start my siding project. Material is in yard. Haven't yet ordered the XPS foam board but, I'm considering using FOAMULAR 250 3 inch R-15 insulation Sheathing under 10 inch staggered shake vinyl siding for a NY zone 4 climate. Any thoughts?

great video, good explanations, what is on the inside of these walls, and are you insulating for heat? or cold? or both? I am in Central Ontario Canada, winter runs about 4- 6 months some years.

Both! I'm in Saskatchewan so cold is our main reason to insulate.

@@HouseImprovements Oh yeah, I have seen the weather you guys get. Something Else I was asking is what is on the inside of the house? in the wall cavity.

can i use cedar singles on top of that insulation? would i have to use straping on top of the insulation or would i be able to shingle right on top ??? starting my cedar shingles next week. im in mass and this its a great idea for a little extra insulation.

If your rigid is 1" or less thick I would say you could go right over it but if its thicker I would be inclined to either sheeting over the wall first and then installing house wrap and shingles or strapping the wall with 1x4s. We could discuss this more on the forum if you need more info.www.house-improvements.com/forums/

Hi just wondering if i would need to put horizontal furring strips over the rigid foam board for vertical siding insulation? Or should i just put the vertical vinyl siding right on the rigid foam insulation boards?

That’s a really good question. Often I see this type of exterior foam insulation project come together nicely but when it’s time to install stucco or vinyl siding over it, seems to become a “ok now what?” Type of scenario. Also there’s usually other fixtures such as mailboxes and lighting etc that need to be adjusted to accommodate the foam. I’ve heard it recommended in another video to install the foam over the studs then osb / plywood on top of that so you have a substrate to fasten siding to. Just doesn’t seem to be a good way to do this overall. Wish there was a system out there that made sense.

Hi Shannon! Do you tape house wrap AND the rigid foam insulation? Should blue tuck tape be used now? From Edmonton!

Hello It's really great work, however I couldn't understand how you did the corners. Did you bent the styrofoam, the nail it and added the half inch wood on top of it. Thank you

The corners I installed a strip of 1-1/2" foam up each side of the corners then I covered that with a strip of 1/2" plywood . Then i butted 2" foam to those and filled in the rest of the wall surface. The 1/2" plywood on the corners makes applying nails easier for trims and corners.
