Remove excess wax, wipe it with a damp sponge ,then rub vigorously with a piece of brown paper bag.It will burnish the leather. The more you do it ,it will become like glass.Works great on edges.I use bone to burnish edges but always finish with brown paper at the end with a touch of bees wax.Doing leather work for 40+years

The best way to make a patina finish on veg tan leather is thru oxidation techniques..#1 household bleach 5sec to 30sec max depending upon which shade of tan color you like.. #2 8oz / half pint of plain water mixed with 4 or 5 spoons of baking soda powder for a light brown to dark brown shade..1min to 10 min.. #3 is 3% peroxide from a 1st aid kit..#4 clothing dye works for more exotic colors..best wishes my friend..

I use to work at a company that made premium high grade wood stain and leather stain both are actually the same product one just has more Alcohol and oil in it we would just put it in cans with different labels our product ingredients were walnut shell dye, alcohol, raw linseed oil, and liquid beeswax but without alcohol and raw linseed oil or any kind of oil it will not soke in the leather so that's why our product had Alcohol and oil in it to be use on leather and wood

@@juangomez4031 i hunt for faux all the time ,i have tons of faux skin boots, lol, anyway, i do auto body paint, and when it gets on interior trim or seats, etc, i use "GOOF OFF", sometimes, i will use laquor thinner, but that's really strong , , you could try mineral spirits , acetone nail polish remover works too, just try a hidden spot first, i've melted door panel trim as soon as it touched it with thinner and you can't fix it at that point

Shoe polish, kiwi, either brown or black, has the stain in the wax, can be put on cold or with heat. Does a nice edge burnish also. Can be easily found.

Hey Brad, if you try rennaisance wax, applied quite heavily, and heat it in with a candle, it leaves a patina that incorporates the candle smoke! It's a technique that goes back about 3000 years and was used with terracotta! That leaves a really believable bronze patina! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 If you soak the leather bfore you pierce the stitching holes they will stay open in the same way that stamping does!

0:36 Usually if a paint is in a tin (metal) it is oil based and if it is in a plastic container, it is water based (water causes the metal to rust). That is how u can identify oil base from water base about 99% of the time.
@mariusgreeff3143

@@grantwohlwend8579 Like you, I use the term, almost. Here in South Africa, that is how U can identify almost all the water base paints without reading it on the container, from roof seal to varnish, if it is in a plastic container, it is water base product and if it is in a metal container, you can be almost 99% certain that it is a oil base product. Very few water base products still come in metal containers.

Having worked in paint manufacturing, I would recommend getting a solvent based ngr (non grain raising) wood strain. They're mostly alcohol (ethyl and isopropyl) with dye.

I used wood stain on a wallet I made and it worked great but I also stained the coarse side of the leather and it still smells like wood stain to this day. I also hit it with a shoe polish after and it looks awesone. It's a great look if you can can stand the smell!

@@damonbombino1237 no I get what ever is most affordable it all works the same ..I looks a little cazy at first but it even out just put a liberal amount evenly over the entire project ...add layers til you get the desired color...keep in mind it will lighten up a shade as it dries /cures so you're safe to go pretty dark

I use the mixwax on my tooled leather earrings. I usually apply two coats and lightly wipe the high parts of the tooling and it turns out as a great antique stain. Much less forgiving than a traditional antique leather but got started using it when I was at college 12 hours from home and didn’t want to buy anything and I had wood stain. Had decent luck!

I would try the middle patch covered in one of the wax finishes when it dries. I saw that you were using a drill bit to make the holes in your leather for the sheath. In my experience, when making a knife sheath, I find that the sheaths are slightly stronger and look better if you use a set of punches that includes a 1, 2, 4 and 6 hole punch at around 3 or 4 mm separation and make holes around 1 or 1.5 mm in diameter. This pulls the edges closer together allowing you to slick the edges. According to what I have seen on other channels from much more experienced people that have worked leather much longer than I have, a leather project looks much better if the edges are glued or contact cemented together, stitched and then slicked with a wax being used at that time. You have the wax finish part covered as I saw in the video with the woodsman's wax.

I used min wax very successfully on some veg tanned leather. However, I did not wipe it on, I dipped the piece (wallet sized) in the can where the leather very readily absorbed the compound. I then wiped off the excess and allowed it to dry for about 3 minutes. After wards I crumpled it And straightened it back out to achieve a patina like look. It worked very well. Looked like a high quality chrome tanned leather. It also had zero rub off when dried... maybe an hour or so.

regarding the boiled linseed oil and wax polish, i have made and experimented with it using it as a wooden knife handle polish and leather seal for sheaths. on its own it gives a fairly light finish but i learned to use a little boiled linseed oil 1st to achieve a darker look, and then the oil/wax polish to finish

Cool experiment. Try heating the leather prior to any treatment, especially when using waxes. It opens the pores of the leather, after applying hit with heat again to seal. Thx for sharing. Really like your channel. New sub here.

I used stain on a sheath not long ago, dark walnut on semi conditioned veg tan. It had pen marks and I needed to cover it up. I did multiple applications of the stain and it gave it a pretty good look but the smell was horrible and I had to clean it and recondition it. The customer carries the sheath almost every day so I would say it ended up ok.

I tried this using Minwax Special Walnut and then again with Minwax Jacobean...TOTAL FAILURE!!!! All I ended up with was a sticky mess! There's no doubt that it WILL color leather, IF you can tolerate the goo until it all dries. I ended up with some great Mottled effects, so it does work, but it never dries. Thank you for trying. I think it will depend on the tanning process. I have had olive oil to darken rawhide before.

Penetrating stain is likely the worst choice, as it has NO polymer in it at all. As opposed to something like an old masters wiping or gel stain that both have an ability to (when properly top coated) adhere to very smooth surfaces. That said top coating is not necessary as leather is porous and should provide a great bond.

I use neetsfoot oil and coconut oil constantly for my leatherwork. I've not noticed any difference between them, but the unrefined coconut oils leave a white film that buffs off easily. But both nourish and soften leather plenty.

Jeff Caligari I would clean the leather carefully with warm water, let it dry completely and then lightly dye with Fiebings Black Leather Dye. For protection I’d recommend warming up some beeswax and applying by buffing it in with a soft rag.

Thanks for that, i just spent the last hour trying rit fabric dye, first time using that on anyrhing, didnt work so well, it is the powder form, first coat dried crystal powder remains, wiping just took everything off. Second coat in near boiling water to fully disolve crystals but same results, reverted back to heavy scrub with shoe polish and letting it sit as i type this. Right now no transport or funds to go out and get leather. I was forced onto pension and public/gov stealing everything off my. Gov thinks im loaded and my communications and post being redirected to fabricated drama show i have nothing to do with in order to discredit my claims and redirect attention...same way your guys went after Iraq when the same people who blamed them used media and medical after stirring the pot with the 9/11 attacks. Inkeep bringing that up because the situation I am trying to overcome is not only bigger than that but not televised but also the same processes and methods used to lure security away from targets and claim departments through underground networks and music, pub, drugs, not connected to computer networks. This is why they steal identities so you hate Isis and her name is trashed then some one else claims to be her when the tables turn. Melbourne Australia is the hub for that, i am still too close to home to divulge any further details. Isis was a target by those who were stealing my work and life behind my back claiming drugs and alcohol and i dont remeber where I have all my legal documents in order and the Australian pub drug networks have media influence and casinos to theow around. Want to arrest me because they robbed nations with fraud and i have evidence, claiming I am sick to stay away yet hospital visits contradict each other, time lost...im kind of telling more than just you here, i hope the third parties know about forth parties. Google and you tube got taken over after i went from optus indian to communicate with google and us embassies. They being flooded and spammed one after the other and i am being iscolated so i dont get my case grounded and looked at. In thats time I havent had a chance for my own priorities and life. Living in car and homeless shelters on pention with govt fines courts medical applying pressure while manipulating communications. Please pass this around. There will be a number of people who would try to look into this but i assure you there needs to be a large class action and it has to be foreign based (meaning not Australian or Maltese for that matter) PAN AM lockerbie, lubya malta. Pressure on me because i grew up in the middle of that. People here avoiding issues, slander, mockery, beaheded, think its joke, bunch of children playing with fire. Courts Australia are home and away drama show. No real investigations just a b7nch of pub kids playing games with ego and media. Departments taken over police ambushed killed replaced dont even know it, taking orders from tainet motives... places i worked closed down one after other, italian catholic networks, real estate concrete. Maltese medical, communications media police ( nasa died, important people, lead to fake presentations, planes disappear. Melbourne convincing people to smoke dope to forget about it and then blame drug use for delusions. Profalactics stolen from hotel rooms, artificial incemination, tax payments, unallocated houses not on any list or files. My licence taken off me no real trail, court staged with preset results for their own benefit, ribbed by police, charged with having knife in public (fishing gear in van) then evicted and only kitchen knife out of all kitchen equipment put in box when I was thrown outside...
