Today we will make a rocket stove hybrid from our wood stove, this will not work any where near as good as a rocket stove but the heat riser will help distribute the heat, it works maybe 2 to 3 times better with this attachment on so it's a huge improvement in heating our house.
Make sure you subscribe to follow our daily lives in this farm!
Hey to everyone!!
We are two young adults, Despina 22 and Deivids 23 renovating an old farm house from 1817 in Latvia. Everything in and out of our house has been done by ourselves with no hired help. Soooo far everything is going great and there haven't been any incidents.
DIY is going to apply to nearly everything in our house. Our budget is tight and that has made us appreciate every "ugly" part of this house and turn it into something new and beautiful.
We give new life to things that others would throw away!
In this journey we are not alone! We are starting up our little Farmily and part of it are
3 goats
1 Mom Sheep & 2 Baby Sheep
4 chickens
1 rooster
and 2 geese
Oh yeah and my cat Ivi
Despite our daily problems we are two young people full of joy and happiness, ready to start a new crazy chapter in our life. It wouldn't be fair to keep this fun for us!
that's why we want YOU to be also part of our Farmily!!
Hope you enjoy our video!
We love our very supportive community!!
Thank you so much for the support you are giving us. Every view, like, share, subscribe and financial support means a lot to us. Any support is extremely appreciated!

I think that a thin modern barrel would work just fine. Modern barrels are often used as the fire box in many wood stoves and I have personally seen then last 20 years. That is with the fire directly in them, you are only putting hot smoke through it. great idea for a heat exchanger . Glad to see it help so much.

In the longterm it might be an idea to coppice cherry trees. (Or pollard to keep the leaves out of animal's reach). We did this at home for many years. The regrowth is always extremely straight and yields useful sticks and firewood. Don't coppice the tree every year, because it won't give much fruit that way. Cherry is a sublime firewood and fun for crafting too. Made an insect hotel out of a log yesterday. Love your vids!
@DoBeDiff

Thank you for the idea! We actually have a cherry tree which is spreading like crazy, I cut down all the new trees growing around it as it was a jungle. But we could plant a large section in the field with cherry trees, I would like them as a wood meterial for furniture. I also need to invest in a wood chipper or make one my self as it would be a good way to burn smaller branches 🤔❤️

Nice build, well done. I would probably consider placing some cement board or stone sheet on top of the barrel. I had an oil drum that reached to about 30cm below my ceiling and the surface temperature of the ceiling could easily reach 200˚C. Also, although you have a thick barrel, it is also old and rusty and it's possible the intense heat of the riser might eventually breach it. It would also give you a bit more mass for heat storage after burn-out. Enjoy your warm room!
@mikecliff2367

Great idea. I too wanted to suggest a heat shield above the stove to protect the wood floor above it. To prevent any chance a breach would get out of the barrel. A stone barrier is a good idea.

You solved many mysteries for people who are looking how to save firewood- thank you! One suggestion: exhaust gas are still hot after leaving your barrel: you can weave them through house for at least 4 meters and put cob over it to create thermal mass- idea is to store thermal energy and do not start fire for two days...
@DoBeDiff
@DoBeDiff 2 жыл бұрын
I had a plan for that but it's a bit messy! For now it seams to be semi clean burning still producing some waste in the chimney but maybe 10% of what it would be without the barrel! 😀

I don't think this qualifies as a "rocket stove", nor a hybrid. What you've made seems to be more of a "bell type" or "bell style" heat exchanger, attached to the top of a wood stove. That said, I imagine what you've come up with is still much more efficient than a typical wood stove installation. Beautiful, man. Keep up the good work.

Thank you! ❤️ It seams to work for now! We do need an insulated chimney to be fully safe ad the smoke is too cold or the difference in temperature is too high. But for now It works great, after 20 burns there isn't much of a build up so it isn't as fast as I was scared it will be. I was making this and was non stop worried it will not work at all, but works exceptionally. I want to buy an inspection door which will be easy to install on the barrel! 😊

Greetings from Canada! I would be interested in knowing what the temperature difference of the pipe going out the wall was before you added your heat exchanger/rocket stove , compared to now! Rocket stoves are famous for getting the most heat out of the wood and just warm(not hot) air goes out the chimney. Great job!👍👍😁

It's great what you've done to make the house more comfortable. I'm not sure how hot the top of the barrel gets, but assuming it's the same as a typical flue pipe you should probably have a gap of between 15-18 inches between it and the floorboards above (as they're combustible). That's normally for a 5" or 6" pipe, so it could be that the large flat surface at the top means you should have even more of a gap? I'd suggest you have a look at recommendations for some sort of shield just to be safe, especially as it could be running overnight. Enjoyed the video and the way you've getting around problems, but thought I'd mention the shielding as it's worth checking out.

II am trying to figure out how to make the basement stove more efficient. I don't really need to heat the basement very much, so the more heat going up, the more efficient (unless I store the heat in mass before sending up, not sure if that would also help)

Do not use your wet/dry vacuum on ash! You will have ash all over your house. My hubby did that and all our jackets smelled like a barbecue. The smell was so strong my son’s teacher sent a note home complaining. I had to do some major cleaning to get the smell out of our sofas.

Don't worry this is a vacuum made for ash and construction use, it's not a normal vacuum! 😀❤

Did you leave the insulation inside the barrel? Also, is it smokeless? Thanks!
