A Wood Thrush singing for 17 minutes echoing through the deep forest is one of the most amazing sounds of summer and a special treat. The bird is seldom seen, but their performance can go on for hours and the melodious and somewhat haunting sound of the Wood Thrush becomes the soundtrack of the high mountain forest along with the occasional fussy squirrel!

I basically lived in the woods behind my childhood home... so many wondrous birdsongs, a plethora of goofy squirrels, & a few million+ other critters with more legs than me...I even loved the rocks, & the beasties under them. I'd give what's left of my (alleged) brain to have that sweet, wonderful, peaceful place back again. Thanks for this, from my old arrhythmic heart.😘🎶💓🎶👏🏾

There's NOTHING that compares to the BEAUTIFUL flute-like song of the Wood Thrush! Yes, they are hard to find as they sing but you sure hear them! I had the privilege of actually seeing one in person singing. I crept up while it was singing on one of the branches of a tall tree but it was on a low branch! I prayed that I'd see one and my prayer was answered! LOVE your channel and how you LOVE and APPRECIATE nature! :-)

johnifly = My 13 year old dog passed this year on Memorial Day. I was very sad. My son wanted a pup but he wanted a hound. I've always wanted a German Shepherd. Kept thinking, this rare combo will never happen. It was during the afternoon & I was sitting at my computer grieving. I looked up & a bird I love to hear sing was on a branch near my window. It was a Wood Thrush & they sound like a flute. They are always in the woods hidden & I've only actually seen one. It brightened my day. I've often shared "Nature = Evidence of God". Right after, I had that nudge to check Craigslist. Went to the dogs for sale & there was a listing for German Shepherds. I clicked on the link & they were for sale the next county over. Then I continued to read German Shepherd/Mountain Cur mix. What? A hound & German Shepherd mix? Then I read the temporary names given. One was Buddy which was a dog I had a few years ago. Then I read Chubs. This is the name of my dog that just passed. I started praising/thanking God, crying & smiling. I knew he had his hand in this. I had prayed for my older dog not to suffer & to pass quietly in his sleep which he did. I had also prayed that God would please let me know what dog I should get. I don't get anything subtle & it was made very clear to get my attention. Yep, when I read Chubs I knew that dog was the one. We now have him. He's 14 weeks old. Just wanted to share that God truly loves us & I'm certain he doesn't like to see us grieve or be sad. He also likes to see us happy. I'm certain it makes him smile. Just wanted to share.

I'm in the Hudson Valley, on the edge of 100+ wooded acres, and for 44 years they've made summer mornings & evenings mystical. Not sure I'd even SEEN one until I built a koi pond about 12 yrs ago, with a waterfall & little stream feeding it. Wood thrushes started coming out of the forest to splash in the stream. Scarlet Tanagers, too!!!! Tanagers are SO bright red, but they & thrushes almost never show themselves

I only get one or two of these each summer in the woods behind my house. They are dying off because the woods they need both up north and in central America are being logged out. In my opinion this is the most beautiful bird song in the world, far more so than european nightingales or shama thrushes. I play this recording to encourage my Timbrado canaries to include "floreos" in their song. This is a good recording but still pales beside the real thing heard outdoors close up.

Absolutely right! This is where I first noticed it, because you can only hear it in an undisturbed woodland. Once you’ve heard it, you know you’ve found heaven, the peaceful woods. I noticed it in West Virginia when I went camping, but on that trip I went everywhere from NC where I live up to Ohio and the woodland sounds were the same everywhere I went!

I would leave straight from work and go to the lake after a long day at work, get out on the water in the boat and fish. Most evenings l was the only one out there and it would just be me, the boat and a wood thrush singing this song.

I used to listen to this song EVERY evening as the day drifted into night. For the longest time, I didn't know which bird was serenading me. They would fly away just as I would get them into sight on my monocular. This was back in the dark ages of the 90s in Virginia, before the internet! When I finally got one into focus, I could finally identify my minstrel …

On my hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2021, the Wood Thrush was my favorite song bird. I associate the evening song with relief and contentment - getting off my aching feet, lying back in my hammock, digesting the sights and sounds of the day. What could this fellow be saying? Wish I had language to describe the song. I liken parts of their songs to R2D2 - the lovable Star Wars robot. Was R2D2-speak inspired by the Wood Thrush? I wish I had language to describe the song. Or is it a call? I don't know. I noticed different variants at different regions of the trail. New England thrushes have Yankee accents, eh? Never laid eyes on one.

One of my favorite birds to listen to. It's amazing how God made them. I tried to figure out what kind of birds these are for years! After a long search of listening to many bird songs on the ornithology website, I finally found it last year. Here is something from From Cornell Lab of Ornithology."The Wood Thrush is a consummate songster and it can sing “internal duets” with itself. In the final trilling phrase of its three-part song, it sings pairs of notes simultaneously, one in each branch of its y-shaped syrinx, or voicebox. The two parts harmonize with each other to produce a haunting, ventriloquial sound." Too bad that it's numbers are declining because of the parasitic brown headed cowbird.

What bird will build its nest under a pier? While swimming in a manmade lake that has lots of piers, I found a birds nest under a pier very close to water and it had three beautiful little ones in the nest made of twigs. they were constantly being fed by maybe both parents. The birds looked like swallows but I couldn't tell because I am not that knowledgeable. Do you know? I am worried that they will not survive their first flight out of the nest.
