Wood Turn a Light or Fan Pull

In this woodturning tutorial, Mike demonstrates how to turn those attractive cutoffs into one-of-a-kind light or fan pulls. He does this on a wood lathe without a chuck by using a turned wood mandrel with a Morse Taper.

I have found the chain kits from Craft Supply to be the most cost effective at about 40 cents each if you disregard the shipping. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/65/5329/Turners-Select-Light-Pull-Chain-Kit-5-Pack?term=chain These are cheaper than 3' lengths of chain when you have to buy the extra little couplers and figure out how to add a ball stop. But I have also had good luck at Ace where they sold chain by the foot and you could buy all of the couplings and bell or ball fasteners. You can buy the couplers at Walmart a bit cheaper than the big box home development stores like this www.lowes.com/pd/Harbor-Breeze-6-Pack-1-58-in-Multi-Metal-Pull-Chain-Connectors/1000003150

Mike - you pulled a fast one and snuck in one of those truly profound hints that typically never get said. I've had the problem many times that drill bits don't center in my jacobs chuck. It never occurred to me that a simple solution is to put the bit into the chuck before mounting it in the tailstock - when you can still see what you are doing! Thanks - that's a really great suggestion.

I'm with you on CA for finishing. I use it on some pens, but have found that it doesn't work well on anything with any texturing ... leaves white deposits in the grooves.

I am a bit suspect of the Morse tapers on wood lathes. If you use a Morse taper that has been machined properly as on a metal lathe it is very uncommon for a tool to come loose. I see yours popped out of the head stock once. Nice project though. I need to do some of those.

Yes, a wood turned Morse taper will not have the same precision as machined steel one.

I went back at listened and did not hear a problem. If the volume was too low you can raise it on a particular video or increase the volume on your device. I did not get any other comments on the sound quality. What am I missing?
