This is a bowl with a star. The star is an illusion made of 2 types of wood. Walnut and Maple.
Other woods used are Cherry, Padauk and a piece of Koa.
I enjoy making things that have a lot of geometry in them. The illusion makes it even more interesting.
Finishes used:
Minwax sanding sealer
Minwax Polycrylic
Acks Abrasive Paste
Acks Polishing/Restoring Paste
Tool used:
Bowl Gouges
Negative Rake Scraper

Thank You for the detailed explanation. I followed your plan and made a similar star, however, since I didn’t have any padauk, I decided to keep the sides low (2”) and turn a platter rather than a bowl.

@@ThePapa1947 I posted a photo of my platter on my (Rick Bourque) FB wall. Thanks again for your intricate details and video. I would have never been able to make this without your detailed video. The only issue I had was my 30 degree cuts were off ever so little which became apparent during my dry fit. So I glued up two pairs of three star tips, temporarily held then together with carpet tape and sanded the two sets flat on the sander. Of course two of the four cherry fillers had to be cut differently then the other four pieces of the base. A rather tedious process, but in the end it all came together.

I made a coaster like the bottom of this bowl, and now I am learning to turn. I hope one day to turn bowls, I'm working on a spindle, made with a 2X4. I'm gonna ask my tutor if we can square it off, though. A 2X4 is difficult for me. I had my first tutorial yesterday.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Rachel, that must be a very unique coaster. By all means square that 2X4 up. I suppose everyone probably starts with spindles but I find turning bowls easier but I do turn more of them than spindles. I have turned a lot of spindle type work but they were much bigger than what people think of as spindles. Are you doing this online with a tutor or is it a friend helping you along? @@WithTheGrain527 the way I have done it is light dusting of spray lacquer. A wet coat and it bleeds. Also cleaning it with DNA to get the dust out is a no no. So I just blow it out. My last segmented vase out of Maple and Padauk was a case in point and I talk about it.

Hi Gary, Let me think for a minute before I write a comment...................................................... Still thinking.................................. Got it. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I have seen so many of your segmented turnings each of which has made me think "One day Huw you will be able to do one or two of these." The accuracy in the cutting of the segments just has me shaking my head in utter appreciation of a Master at work. The end result Gary is beautiful. The Paduk is set off so well by the Cherry and the finish is like glass. Your multi angled sled looks interesting. Is there a chance you could explain its set up at some point. This one is in the top 5 of my favourite pieces of yours. The top five by the way all have equal standing as I cannot pick one above the other. Take care Gary. Cheers, Huw
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 жыл бұрын
Well Huw it will not take me long to respond. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your words make all the work of doing this a joy. I never know for sure when I start one of these if it will have the impact I am looking for. When I bring it in and show the wife then I know. She really loves this one. The sled is very basic but I will try and do something where I can explain it. Some of the setups I can use a wedge to set it up. But I rely on a couple of accurate protractors as well. Thanks again my friend and take care, Gary

Hi Papa (Gary) another great video. I do like segmented turnings, the contrast between the walnut, maple and cherry for the bottom are stunning. You have a good eye Papa and you are a very talented artist. Thanks for sharing

Thank you very much Valerie. For someone who has a slight color blindness I appreciate the comment. Mostly telling some blues and greens apart. Good thing I do not have any blue wood..lol Take care, Gary
