I'm sure you've gotten hundreds of comments like this, but I truly appreciate you sharing your passion for wood turning with the world. I bought my first lathe just before Christmas and prior to that had never seen a lathe in person. but after watching a ton of your videos, I have created some pretty amazing things. I am simply put... totally addicted to turning. I look for scraps of wood everywhere I go, just hoping to find my next creation. I owe you much gratitude for getting me started...even though these beginner's guide posts are three years old they are timeless and still inspiring newcomers daily I would wager. thanks again.

I want to thank you for doing these beginner's guides, Mike. I got a small lathe from my in-laws for Christmas, but just got it set up. I had never used a lathe at all up until a couple weeks ago, and had no idea what I was doing. I watched through all of your beginner's guides, which helped me quite a bit. I just finished my first goblet, and it turned out okay, but I would never have been able to hollow it out if it weren't for your suggestions. I still have a long way to go, but I am enjoying everything So far. Thanks again, and keep the videos coming!

Thank you MIke, always enjoy your videos. Not long into wood turning but today I completed a nice little bowl drilled with a forstner bit and then hollowed out with a half inch bowl gouge. After a glorious catch shattered its predecessor I was determined to try again. I was given some nice straight lengths of cherry just the other day, similar to your piece so may have to give a goblet a go.

Hi Mike. Wanted to say thank you for such a great video and you're a big inspiration to me. I watched this a couple times, went to try and turn a goblet, my head and my hands seem to have lost connection and I chucked the goblet. Watched this video again and the addendum to this video, got re-inspired and dug the goblet out of the trash and made the best of the situation. My lathe is too small to have a steady rest so that made this the most frustrating project so far but also the most rewarding. Thank you.

I greatly appreciate the beginner's guide approach as I have only played around for about an hour on my lathe so far. Too many other projects took precedent and I really had no idea what I was doing. I learned how not to hold a skew chisel when it caught and snapped in half on me. It was a really cheap beginner set of chisels, around $30 for a set of 8... that tells you how good they were, but then when you consider that if I had a good chisel it would have either cost me money when it broke, or taken off some body parts when it did NOT break. Either way, I thought I should find some tutorials before getting too adventurous. I have learned more in watching the sped up video of you turning a goblet than I ever would have by trying to figure it out on my own without maiming myself. So thanks for the demonstrations and explanations!

I'm a new subscriber to your channel, Mike. I just purchased a mini-lathe and am just getting started turning after reviewing a lot of KZbin videos. Yours are my favorite! I have only practiced on dimensional 2x2's so far, and one 12-inch length of pine about 3 inches in diameter that I cut from a recently fallen tree branch. Learned a big lesson about sap in green pine! What a mess! After rough-turning (and cleaning up all the sap that got all over everything!), I placed it in a food dehydrator for 3 days, which dehydrated it from a weight of about 12-1/2 ounces to about 6-7/8 ounces. I am about to try to turn it into a little lighthouse. It developed a few hairline cracks in the ends that I intend to fill with thin CA glue, although I doubt that I will use the ends in the final product. In practically all of the videos I've watched are instructions to avoid the pith in a log and cut blanks that exclude the pith, and I believe I understand why. I noticed in this goblet video that you start with a dried log/branch, which must include the pith, but you didn't discuss the pith, and you turned it without doing anything about the pith. Is there some exception to avoiding the pith that I haven't come across yet? Love your channel, Mike! This video is over 3 years old, but to a new turner, it's gold! Thank you so much for what you do!
@MikeWaldt7 жыл бұрын
+George V Thanks for subscribing and your support George. If I use a dry blank and there's is no major cracking I tree trend to no worth about the pith, in most cases though it's best to avoid it as is the general rule :) Cheers Mike

I think the proportions on that goblet are spot on. I particularly like the thickness of the stem. Recently I've been tapering my stems and people seem to like it, it also makes it a lot easier. Mind you, I still have to go for the thinnest stem ever because I love to see the bowl swing off and head across the shed. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Hello Mike, enjoyed your video on turning a simple Goblet. Thanks. My method of centering square/round stock, particularly if doing many of the same size, is to fit a bung with a sharp pointed center towards the back of my four jaw self centering chuck. Tap the end of the stock. There you have it, centered and center punched in one go. This can be done with the chuck lying on its back on a bench if you are worried about hammering the headstock bearings.
