Hi Mike, Thanks for another great video. A hint for others who would like to build this but see the pin layout as a challenge would be to use a dowel centre to transfer the pin layout, or to nail a small brad in one side, trim the head off with side cutters, press the two parts together then pull the brad out with side cutters leaving corresponding holes on both parts. Keep making more content for us please. Cheers, Rick

Thank you for adding text narration with what tools you're using. Having but a mere few hours at the lathe myself, or the workshop, for that matter, I don't have the eye to always see what tools are actually being used =P We all begin somewhere, right? A little trick I've learned from pinning together parts in scale models, when you're marking where to drill; put a small small blob of colour, just a tiny drop on the rim where you want the pin. Carefully place the lid back. Lift the lid. The tiny drop of color has now painted a corresponding dot on the lid as well.
@MikeWaldt7 жыл бұрын
iI try to remember to do it on most of my videos now, but do sometimes forget, I will use my ageing brain as an excuse for that ;) Great tip with the coloured dot as well, thanks for that Peter, and for watching. Take care Mike

Nice project Mike. When I have to line up holes like that I have some small pins sharpened at one end. I drill a small hole just big enough for the pin and insert the pin so a small amount is sticking out. Line up the other piece and press down to get a center point for the other hole. Much like the dowel marking pins but smaller.

Hi Mike, Thanks for another entertaining video. I am certain you will receive similar comments from others but as I regularly make swivel top salt pigs, thought I would share the following learnings. I use brass pivot pin hinges and not just a rod for the swivel. The advantage is you can insert and epoxy the brass bushings into both the body and lid, the insert to stainless pin. As the pin and bushings are precisely machined the result is a perfect fit that will not go slack with use. I use 6mm dowel marking pins to ensure the body and lid holes align. I use inset 6mm magnets to provide a positive close, they are strong enough to keep the pig closed and salt contained if the pig is kneed over in use. Lastly, I make the lid at least double the finished thickness, finish the inside face and then drill the lid to accept the dowel marking pin first. The hole depth needed is only 8mm. I then go on to use the pin to mark the drill point in the base. In the event the position is off you can take 8mm off the lid and refinish. Admittedly, with some woods this adversely affects the grain alignment but not with close graded timbers like oak. very best and keep making the videos which are regular favourites 😎

Great looking box Mike! FYI, I use dowling centers whenever I need to line up holes like that. You can usually get them at any hardware store or home center. They sell them as small as 1/6 of an inch and they work great for that task.
@MikeWaldt7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I have dowel centres, but wanted to try this as another way of doing it. It works oK, if you measure accurately... FIRST TIME.... ;) Cheers Mike
@chehsed3 жыл бұрын
If you were to use a dowel center in this application, you would want to make sure you created a small gap between the lid and the carcass on the side opposite of the dowel center, as opposed to letting the lid rest on the carcass. If you let the lid rest on the carcass while the dowel center is in the hole of the lid waiting to be pressed against the carcass, then the dowel center would -- ever so slightly -- touch the carcass at the wrong spot, and enter at the wrong angle, too. You would find the lid would not line up perfectly with the carcass. You want the lid and carcass to meet straight-on, rather than cockeyed, as you press in the dowel center. Also, dowel centers are not very sharp, and when you want to be precise, you need something sharp to cut the grain.

Hi Mike, great video! As an amateur woodworker and wood turner I frequently find that holes mysteriously move like that. Another great video my friend. 👍🏼 One thing I've done before when trying to meet two pieces together is to mark top and bottom on the outside when placed together, then just mark the position where the pin will be, this then can be marked on lid or base ready for drilling...you won't drill in the wrong place but, make sure you drill perpendicular ... job done. 👍🏼😊

Mike ... watching your video was great ... I'm going to try turning one myself now. You inspired me with an idea on lining up the pin ... what if you took a bb or a small ball bearing and put it between the lid and the box (on the rim where you wanted the pin to be) ... and then when you lined up the grain between the lid and the box you could then press down hard and it would make an indent in both the bottom of the lid and the top of the box and indicate where you needed to drill for the pin in each. Just an idea that came to mind as I watched your wonderful video.

The dowel marking pins, mentioned in other comments, seem like the most accurate way to match up the lid and body holes. Another way would be to line up the grain, then drill through the bottom of the body and into the lid. A short Oak dowel could disguise the bottom of the hole. It depends on what degree of perfection you wish to reach. Personally I think the imperfections give the project character. Perhaps I say that because there is lots of "character" in my work. ;-D
@chehsed3 жыл бұрын
I think using a drill press, with a stop, would put the holes in the same place on the carcass and lid. Of course, since the piece is round, the stop would have to be more than a straight block. Cut a piece of plywood in an "L" shape, and clamp it to the drill press table, to act as the stop. To line up the grain, set the lid on the carcass in the desired position, and set them against the stop on the drill press table, so that the drill bit would enter the wood at the correct location if you were to lower it at that point. Then, lightly draw a straight vertical line on the outside edge of all three pieces: the lid, the carcass, and the stop. That way, when you drill the two holes separately, the pieces will be in the correct orientation on the drill press table for the grain to line up.
@chehsed3 жыл бұрын
Another option would be to clamp the lid to the carcass in the desired position and drill straight through the top of the lid and into the carcass. Then plug the hole on the top of the lid. Or drill up through the bottom, rather than through the lid, and plug the hold on the bottom.
@gilbertbesnard7 жыл бұрын
Very nice salt box! When I make such swivel lid I wait until the end before gluing the pin just in case I make a mistake. This way it's always possible to reposition the pin if needed and keep the grain aligned. My 2 cents... Cheers!

Nice salt cellar. If you epoxy the metal rod to the base instead of the lid and then drill the hole in the lid, even if you do make a mistake the errant hole will be on the bottom of the lid and won't be visible to the user. Don't ask me how I know...Also, what I do sometimes is epoxy the rod into the base, then take a felt-tipped marker and color the top of the rod that's exposed, then line up the lid and press it down to leave a mark where the hole needs to be drilled. Not always fool-proof, but pretty close.

@@MikeWaldt thank you I want to do that to the top of a walking stick. Someone wants to do a stash spot at the top

Let me ask would a wooden dowel work
@hobbyturner66347 жыл бұрын
Dowel pins would help Mike. Otherwise a lovely box

Made one of these several years ago and made the same mistake with the swivel hole.

Glad it wasn't just me it happened to Joe 🙂

That's a good way to set the holes. I am lazier than you, I drill for the hole first, before parting the lid, and then make a wooden peg with a slightly domed top to join them up again. Not as elegant as your method. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Nice job. "Stuff" happens! Now you have a good excuse to make another one, and this time it will be "perfect" for the wife.

Mike I have been making salt cellars (salt pots) for 15 years for my gallery sales. I drill the hole prior to separation of the lid! Also metal pins will corrode from exposure to the salt. I turn a small dowel inserting it through the lid. www.woodbowls.net Marty.

needs a magnet or something to hold it closed
@MikeWaldt7 жыл бұрын
That is a possibility, but the lid stays where you leave it as the whole piece is quite weighty. Thanks for the suggestion though. Take care Mike

Minor mistake. I'd have been more impressed if you had drilled through the top.
