Mike, Excellent review! I had the chance to see and use one of theses tools at my turners club. We had a meeting where the members brought in their hollowing tools and there were several different ones there. I feel having watched your video that I have a much better understanding of this particular hollowing tool. Thank you for such a thorough review. I would also like to sincerely thank you for highlighting my KZbin channel. I truly appreciate you taking the time to tell your viewers about me. Regards, Bob

I am really enjoying your videos, I have not done any wood turning since I was at school over 50 years ago .I have now decided to start it as a pastime in my dotage, your video's as well as some others have stopped me going at it like a bull in a china shop I also love the fact that you talk in imperial as I still cant get to grips with metric. many thanks

Hi Chris, welcome to the club mate :). Beware the "pass time" as you call it could become an obsession, as it did with me, after I first started three years ago. The problem I now find is that work gets in the way....lol. Thanks for your kind words, and support. Take care Mke

I thought I had left a comment here last night but I must have gone off on an adventure somewhere. This is a super review and would make me interested in buying this tool, or multiples. My wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas when we were driving home tonight and I said "Nothing, I don't really need anything". I've changed my mind. Best Wishes, Brendan.

A very thorough review. I saw one at Carl Jacobson's. Seems like a slick & simple design. My concern is the cost to have a full range of tools. Alan
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alan. The tool is well designed and manufactured, and a pleasure to use. The different sized tools are produced to cater for a wide spectrum of needs, from small boxes and hollow forms, goblets, and bowls etc., right up to large deep pieces, so whatever your preferred turning style is, the Hollowing King is able to satisfy that need. Thanks for watching and making an important point. Take care Mike

The outrigger is definitely not a gimmick, it has given me the confidence to hollow, mainly the stability. Knowing you aren't going to blow through the side of a form because the spring is in the perfect position is also a really good thing. My only problem/complaint is that Paul Crabtree only sent the one that I paid for, not the three that I wanted.

Thanks for the words about the Hollowing King tools. Didn't you buy HK58A a few months ago? How are you doing with it? Send pictures if you have any please. Happy hollowing and stay with the grain. Paul

Paul Crabtree Yes, that's right, about 3 months ago probably. I've been using it on small bowls building some skill and slowly narrowing the opening as I get more confidence. I highly reccomend it to anyone especially the guys new to hollowing. Ill get you some pictures sometime.

Awesome review Mike. I saw the tool or a similar one hanging on Carls wall. I guess if I want to be awesome like you guys I better get one. Thank for the review... btw nice to see you back from Holiday, I just love saying holiday. Mark
@MikeWaldt

Thanks Mark, unless you are thinking of large deep hollowed forms, I personally think that the HK75A is the one of choice, as it is capable of 8 1/2" -9" depth, and is not too big for smaller work, as long as it's not too small, in which case The 50A would be the option. Take care Mike

Awesome Review mike looks like you love this tool.Looks like a well build tool i say the large one would do some serious hollowing.I suppose if you where to put a backrest on the lathe for support and change the handle it would be even easier to use :)..... ea so lods of Hollow forms and urns on the way :)

Is there a possibility or concern of the out rigger coming into contact with your chuck? I like the tool, and am serious about purchasing it, since it seems to still allow much flexibility and hand control as opposed to other hollowing tool methods on the market. They seem to either have you "in a cage" (roller style), or (elbow arms) or where it is strapped to your arm which can be a safety issue.
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Brendan, and thanks for watching, and the comment. The camera angle was a little deceptive, however, I would normally have used a smaller tool for a shallow piece like the demo one, I was using this one for convenience, and have no concerns, with proper diligence, about the outrigger hitting the chuck. If you were only hollowing to this depth (2 1/2") you would need the smallest tool the HK38A, which I didn't have to demo with. The tool is a pleasure to use, and with very little practice, lets you get the job done, with confidence, and efficiently. Hope this answers your concern. Take care Mike

Hi Mike. Just went over this again. After a year plus of using the HK, I have to mention Paul's tool to be really good. Even a novice can get to the grips quite easily. As for me, I have used a few since and always coming back to the HK simply because of it's stability making your work so much comfortable. I see you in a few days in Coventry!Cheers.Paul
