This is a segmented bowl with twisted segments. I designed a fixture for cutting them on the band saw. They fit so good I did not need to sand any joints.
Makes a vortex design.
You can see how the fixture is made here:

Minwax water based sanding sealer
Minwax Polycrylic

you had me at "I think everyone could make if they wanted to" you then lost me with you jig and scrap pieces. I mean no disrespect Gary. I just truly need and want to see how to make this beautiful piece, including jig. I have no idea how to make that jig but would love to make the finished art. Thank you so much for sharing just way above my pay grade. Much respect sir.

Your bandsaw jig is brilliant, Gary! I would like to see a video on how you figured out the distance between those 2 pegs to get the angles for a 12 segment disc to work out so perfectly. Thanks for sharing this, my friend. I'm awestruck!! I keep telling Phil that you're not just a pretty face; maybe now he will get it. LOL! 😀😀😀 Amazing work as always, Gary. Your inventiveness is mind boggling. 👍👍👍 Happy turning, .....Gord

Thanks so much Gord! Please don't tell anyone but I think I like making these jigs and fixtures as much as turning. Well on this one for sure. I will be making a video and show how I found the centers for this one. Once that is understood it will be easy to change to more or less segments. As long as you can figure the chord length of an angel. Now there are calculators for that. But at work I had to use trig. But we will start with this one! Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, cord length of an angel. I think I took that in first or second year electrical school. But since that was over 50 years ago I might have a little trouble remembering that. Suddenly wishing I hadn’t thrown away all my textbooks. Oh wait, did you mean angle? Nope, never had anything to do with that. LOL! Have a great day, my friend.

@@ThePapa1947 Hi Gary, And thank you again. I will definitely be watching. I had much this same idea to produce bowls with curvy segments, but got stuck on how to cut the curves so that they would fit together. You have solved that problem with your fixture. My next question is how to cut pieces like this with 2 (two) curves in them. One concave, and one convex, more like a flame. I imagine it's much like the process you showed, but trickier with either 2 fixtures, or one much fancier one. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this. Mark

I spoke to Huw earlier this week and I understand that you are going to make a video about the making of the jig... I will look forward to seeing that... secondly... the 45 degree ring cutting jig is a brilliant idea and is something that I must get... there is almost zero waste on the wood ... just what I need... I was talking to a friend today about making one out of metal... and lastly the polycrylic finish was lovely... I haven't used it but would certainly like to give it a go... great video... take care...All the best.....Andy

Thank you Huw, happy you liked it. There seems to be an interest in the cutting jig so I will work on making a video for it. In my head it is easy to make and easy to understand how it works. But now I have to figure out how I can explain it in an easy way. But I will get it done. Congrats on being No. 1 on being first but you are No. 1 in my book no matter what. Take care my friend, Gary

That is very interesting Scott. Most people do not even know what a patter maker is. I worked with many engineers over the years and enjoyed helping them get there designs to the point that they could be molded in sand. I did a lot of work for a local foundry that cast titanium and made some really interesting pump and valve bodies. Also did a lot of work for Esco which was close by making earth moving equipment. As well as the formerly known as Freightliner trucks. So I am in Oregon, what area did you work in?

@@ThePapa1947 I worked in Indiana at a company called Ford Meter Box. We make water distribution equipment. Anything from the water main connection to the water meter but not the meter. You will see our products going into newly developed housing additions or existing residential or commercial poperties all over the world. l worked on the brass product lines like valves, compression fittings, check valves etc. All of those products are produced in Wabash, IN. If you look down while walking around your town I'm sure you'll see some cast iron meter box or meter pit covers. We purchase all iron castings but all brass castings are designed and produced in Wabash. Very interesting you did pattern work for a company that made titanium castings. Were they investment castings? I machined titanium castings and bar stock while working in some small job shops back in Aurora, IL while putting myself thru Engineering school at University of Illinois. I remember titanium being a real challenge to machine it. I never cared for those jobs😫😉

Thank you Jane, that is funny I might have to look that up. Is it a new video Carl put out? Funny story is a number of years ago I met Carl. He does not live that far from me. He was selling a lathe on Craigslist and I went over and bought it. He told me how he made videos on KZbin so I looked it up. It was the lathe he used when he first stared making videos. So that is sort of how I got interested in doing the same. Thanks for watching, Gary
