Now you've made me dizzy again, Gary! Not from the pattern but from the geometry and mostly from how you even conceive these beautiful masterpieces! Even if I had a pile of segments in front of me and a pattern to go by, I wouldn't be able to assemble them. You are the segment master for sure AND have the gift of being able to explain what you are doing! 50 years from now when we are gone there is going to be a whole new group of segment turners, thanks to you! Great job, professor! 😊 Phil

Well thank you Phil. I suppose it does seem easy to me but I spend a lot of time making sure it will work. And it is in my blood so that is all I can say. Be careful I may send you a box of segments to play with and see what happens LOL. I just love doing any kind of wood turning and hoping this will caring on. Just like you do and as a matter or fact in a few weeks you will see something that people will say it has Phil written all over it and it does. Thank you my friend and till the next time...see ya later, Gary

Osage Orange, Bois d'arc, Maclura pomifera is one of my favorite woods. Yes, I have many favorite woods. Haha. It grows well here in Central Texas. Many beautiful things can be made with it. I have made beads and pendants out of it. It polishes like stone. It also eats chainsaw chains. Haha The thorns on the tree will remove parts of your body quite easily. The fruit looks like a softball sized green brain and can be thrown, but then your hands will be very sticky. Old ranchers here used to keep a Bois d'arc stick in their trucks for when they work working cattle and needed a prod. Some ranchers lined their fence rows with the trees to encourage the cattle to stay on the property. I think your project is awesome.

Well thank you Luie! I was waiting for the right piece of wood to use and all this time it was sitting under one of my benches. I think it was the perfect place for the Osage Orange. I was actually fun trying to get all the pieces out of it. Had me a little worried because had I messed up one segment I was up that creek as they say. And I really did not want to go more than the two rows just because I wanted the illusion to really stand out. I sure appreciate you sending me this piece as I know when you turned yours you really loved the wood. I have all the details worked out for the video and it got even easier as I was doing it. When I show how to make the pattern I will reveal another thing that will make it like falling off a log. Maybe even a log of Osage Orange LOL. Take care, Gary

Thanks so much Glen. So there will be no geometry to speak of. (It will be there but you will not know it or need to) but a calculator might be called upon and a pencil to write down some dimensions. The rest will be up to you to set you sled or fixture up to make the cuts. Easy money! I am getting real excited about doing this and I have a few weeks where I can work on it. I just want to make it real easy to understand. I know I have issues understanding where others may not(too many years of working to close tolerances) But I will get it worked out soon. Thanks for watching, Gary

That is fantastic! Your quick removal of the 12 segment template helped me understand how you positioned your segment cutting jig angles. That makes much more sense then setting the front and back faces separately. Oh, at first I thought you were going full 3D and make one of your “bowl from a board”. Maybe it will be your next one!

Thank you very much Lee. I think do a BFB with this shape would distort the illusion and give it kind of a cartoon look. Thank you Doug. Yes Luie is a real good guy. Been watching him for some time now. We do not have to make everything we see for sure. But if it interest me most likely I will give it a try. I like to watch pen turning but have never tried it and probably will not. But you never know. Take care, Gary

Thank you, Luie! Gary, of course we want you to do another video on this! BTW, Osage not native to Oregon, but it does grow there when planted. Was in my favorite Portland wood factory when a gentleman was inquiring about them buying a whole windrow of the trees that had been planted by homesteaders and needed to be removed. Bet they still have some of it on the shelves. Love this series of optical patterns. Hoping to do some of them this upcoming rainy season.

Thank you Valerie and I did look it up and knew it was not native to Oregon but has been planted here. I wish someone would have planted some here in Garden Home LOL. Which wood factory are you talking about? Working on the follow up video right now. But we have a big birthday party for the special one in my life tomorrow so I best be thinking about that. Take care, Gary
