I turn a tumbling block bowl or maybe it is a platter using Walnut, Maple and Cherry.
I try to show my step by step method to cut and glue up the blank.
This creates a very interesting illusion. It gives many looks, including a stair step.
The process for gluing it together is time consuming but spread over a number of days it was not bad. The pieces all fit in place with only a few needing a slight adjustment.
There were 240 pieces used to make 80 blocks plus a few dozen more to fill in areas around the outside.
Finishes used:
Minwax sanding sealer and Polycyrlic
Acks Abrasive Paste and Polish/Restoring Paste
Tools used:
Bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers.

When I first saw one of these bowls, I couldn’t figure out what was supposed to be tumbling! The second time I changed my focus, and saw it! Then I tried to figure out how you did it., and what you did about the corners that were sticking up.Whew! I took me countless views and seeing various other types of segmenting to realize what you do. I gave up after that. Being able to figure all that out, what goes where and how completely overwhelms me!. I’m glad and impressed that you have figured it out, so you can produce such amazing pieces!

Saw this combo of woods used to make cutting boards. This approach is certainly unique.
@ThePapa1947

Yes it is used for cutting boards and probably more than for bowls. The glue up would be easier that way.
@ThePapa1947

Yes it is used for cutting boards. Gluing the pieces can be easier because you can glue them in long lengths then cut to the size you want.

A few years ago I made some Escher photo illusions with Lego-blocks. But I did need Photoshop to do that trick 😏. What you are making here is unbelievable. I always liked the Escher Cubes and Cube houses as a drawing. And as a cutting board it was great. But in a big bowl like yours, that's just unbelievable. What a lot of work you have had here. Magnificent! 💪👍 Frank.

Thank you Byron, Those fixtures force the joints together nicely. But the pieces have to be made to fit them just right or it will not work. First one of these I made I decided the individual fixtures were going to help. After I had the blocks glued I came up with making fixtures to hold 6 blocks at a time. So far it has been working out. Although this is only the 3rd one I have made. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Villy, I appreciate your comments. So the jigs are just cutouts in stacked up baltic birch. They can be band sawed out. But I have a CNC mill so I used that. The gigs are really what makes this accurate as it is a clamping fixture that pulls all 3 joints into the right place. Thanks for watching, Gary

Say what! My initial response when you started to explain what you were going to do. Simply amazing! That’s all I can say. Still dizzy from watching that thing turn around. I’ll bet that will be a keeper! I’ll have to look at this one again and again! Thanks friend. Stay safe & take care.

That bowl is awesome.. I have been watching more and more of your videos since I found your channel. It has made me rethink a lot of what I have been doing along with things that I have purchased especially finishes. Listening and watching what you do has reminded me of going back to using items I grew up watching my father use. Tried and true methods are easier then trying something new all the time.

Thank you Chris for your comments. I have mentioned a number of times on my videos that I have been using Deft Lacquer since 1962. It worked great then and works great now. I will try new things and if I like it I add it to what I use. Like Minwax Polycrylic. Really good stuff. Also the Minwax Wipe On Poly. They all have a place in what I use. The piece of wood is how I decide. I also use a lot of Zinsser Shellac. I am not sponsored by anyone but people wonder what I use so I mention it. Again thank you got your kind comments. Take care, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 I plan on getting some deft as soon as I can find it. I also like the zissner shellac and I plan on going back to using minwax again. I too wait until the wood tells me what it wants to look like.

M. C. Escher lives! Beautiful work in every way (including the prologue).....I'm very relieved that the wood was more compliant than I would have thought...best wishes and be well.

Thank you Dr. Skip, glad you liked my little prologue. Always hard for me to start the video off. Yes I have heard that this is a reminder of Escher. I guess if you changed one letter in that name you would have mine. These blocks actually turn very nicely. I did make it a bit harder with them at different levels and at different places in the diameter but it worked alright. I turned down hill on them a little at a time. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary
