Mike, as a novice Woodturner it's comforting to see experienced turners make mistakes as well. Some days it seems like nothing is going right on the lathe, others are magical and almost make me forget about the bad ones. I really enjoy your videos.

We all make mistakes, which add to the learning...but as you say when we don't for a while we think we've "cracked" it...but do we ever? ;) Thanks for watching Cheers Mike

Thanks for sharing this "fail". Knowing that we all have these moments makes me feel better about the blue tinge that hovers over my shop when I turn. So far I have had a vase and several bowls chase me around the shop after a catch on my part. Luckily no injuries to me and minimal damage to the piece of work. I look forward to the save as we really do learn from our mistakes and how to recover from them.

You did us all a favour with that glue and coffee technique because I'm sure there aren't many of us who have had to use it so extensively. At least, now, we know it is reliable. I think a lid on that piece will make a good save. Best Wishes, Brendan.

It's good that you reveal failures as well as successes; and that you admit to expletives when it happens! I was beginning to feel that I might be in a minority of one when this sort of thing happens. On the positive side it does present the opportunity for a redesign or, at worse, an addition to add to one's log store for the fire! I've already seen what you have since made of it and came back to try and find your ebonised filial. I'll keep looking. Meanwhile keep up the good work, Mike.

I'm thinking about (finally) getting a hollowing system and I think, based mostly on your videos, I'm going to get one of the smaller hollowing king set-ups! Excited to be able to open up another avenue on my turning I've never tried filling inclusions with coffee grounds--I'm not really a coffee drinker-- but I do like using acrylic paint. Since it's water-based it doesn't seep and stain the way resin and CA glue can, it's easy to find, and it comes in lots of colors
@MikeWaldt7 жыл бұрын
Let me know what you finally decide on, I would be very interested. Cheers Mike
@GSMachinist7 жыл бұрын
Definitely-- I'm still not 100% sure but I got a beautiful small olive log today and cut it up for bowls, boxes and hollow forms so I should get on that quickly....

Oh, I can imagine the language was pretty close to me knocking one of my glass mosaics off on the floor face down. I can't wait to see the final form.

@PaulLockwood8 жыл бұрын
Certainly felt for you at the end there when you got the catch. You can switch off the audio or overlay a very very very long beep to cover up all those *$*& words! The video reminds me a lot of some of Yuvals videos just showing that with some work what looks like a piece of wood you would throw away can be carefully worked and produce something very nice. I look forward to seeing the follow up as I think this will still look great with a lid and finial. It will be interesting to see you choice of lid to complement all those cracks in the main item. Also big thanks for sharing when it all goes wrong as it is so easy to just cut it all out.

Oh Dear Mike just when it was getting good. I forget how many design changes I have had but at least it gives you the opportunity to create another nice piece. Since I don't make videos no one knows when I make a "Design Change". ;-) For all they know it was the original design. But seriously, I tried epoxy with coffee grounds...didn't like the look. Then I got the idea of very fine coffee powder mixed into the epoxy. Tried my adjustable coffee grinder, even at the finest setting it was too course. But some super fine dust would collect in the catch can, just what I wanted. I collected the dust and after several tries I had enough of the powder. It works great, like dark brown pigment. I also tried a heat gun on the epoxy after hearing it would take out the air bubbles. It does that, but in addition it thins out the epoxy so it flows into cracks nicely. It also helps the epoxy set up more quickly, I guess the heat speeds up the chemical reaction. I thought I'd share the discoveries from my experiments.
