One benefit of using 3d printed modular stuff is that you can easily store and reuse the files in the future. Also, 3d printing lets you change the colors, so, for example, you could use black plastic for impact tools. With woodworking, you'll have to measure everything, find the right bits and tools, and it'll almost be like starting from scratch.

So I agree on the benefits of 3d printing, that’s why I like the series as a way to expose woodworkers to it and show how it’s useful in the shop 👍 the dig on woodworking though… I wouldn’t go throwing stones, there are tons of woodworking apps where I model and store all my measurements, set up blocks and jigs make making those cuts easy using different species and stains I could easily color code. There’s also the enjoyment in crafting. I could knock 3-D printing in a ton of different ways however, it’s not a this or that, it’s different ways of accomplishing things and different jobs call for different tools. I really enjoy both and see the different merits in both.

I’m a 3d printer guy who is trying to organize his wood shop - thrilled to see someone embracing the best of both worlds, a lot of people don’t understand the crossover and potential. It’s a makers world out there! Also, you have only scratched the surface with the modular design, I’m going to tinker and send you something. This is a happy coincidence as I was just looking at all the wood power tool organizers and thinking of quicker, easier, 3d printer options.

Instead of having the different spacers and having to "scale up" for different sizes, the basic design could be made "parametric" and then you could always print _just_ the size that you need, i.e. without needing to also print a separate spacer nor having to worry about the mounting hole sizes being problematic at different sizes.

I have one of those keyhole bits laying around I might have to try using it like this. Also making a printed version is very tempting for custom tool holders. Clamp holders could be a good idea to put head to head
@BitnerBuilt

You know, I had that keyhole bit lying around for ages, I bought it for the usual picture frame keyhole hanger inset, but honestly rarely ever use it so it was nice to find a different use for it. One user did point out that a dovetail bit might be better in the long run, so I’ll have to play with that too, good luck on the giveaway!

Like the video and modular design. While watching, I noticed a 3d printer could print out the components of the wood system. It would be the same style plate with T-slots. The plates could be printed on end with out the need for supports. They could then be screw to an upper shelf. Using multiple plates you could make it as wide as needed. Then the vertical dividers could be printed with a matching slot to slide into the T-slot on each end. These could also be printed on end without need for supports. The bottom plates would also be printed vertical without the need for supports and T-slots. With multiple width bottom plates you could chose the proper size needed for each tool. This would effectively make a modular system with the 3d printer the same as the wood system. Additionally, the strength of the plastic could allow for closer spacing giving more options for arranging the parts.

The benefits of 3D printing toolholders is the ability to customize and create bespoke tool holders for all of your tools. I understand the desire for modularity so you can print it once and forget it, but with the ability to create something bespoke I'm not too sure it's necessary.
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt 5 ай бұрын
Sure but I’d say the same thing about my wooden holders. I’m constantly buying new tools, and so I regularly have to rip out my bespoke wooden tool holders, and completely remake them again to accommodate the new tools. So I have started to build all of my wood holders with modular in mind as well. Just presenting one option and perspective for it. Of course everybody’s different with how they want to do it..

Those must've taken a long time to print! I've been adding 3d printing to my woodworking projects and I've found that using the printer just for the small precision parts to be more fun. For example in this case, just the inserts and some rails for them can be printed & the rest is just making boxes which we're all very experienced at! You could also prevent the need for all that support material by having the cleat stick out on a 45deg angle. Looks like it would be possible for this model.

I like both designs. I Actually have ideas for upgrades. For the wooden system, I’d add a dadoed back so when you slide in the dividers, the back of the dividers would engage the dado. That would help keep the dividers from splaying outwards away from the tool when the weight of the tool rests on the bottom of the divider. On the 3D print, i like your idea of the batteries on top. I’d add a lock on battery adapter plate so you can click in and securely store your batteries. the lock on could reuse the design you have for stacking the tool holders laterally. A big thanks for sharing your design drawings for free. Not too many folks do that. 🎉

PS an idea for another vs could be concentric cam locks, wood vs 3D print. I haven’t decided on a 3D printer yet, but I’m close. I make wooden concentric cam locks, teardrop shape, to act as dog hole clamps, a mechanism to engage/disengage wheels on roll around work carts, and a lifting mechanism to engage a dust collector bucket.

Great ideas! I mentioned the dado back at one point for rigidity (or at least I filmed it at one point, might have been cut for time) but either way your right there, I specifically didn’t do it because I was placing in really deep items that would have prohibited them being put if I had put a backer on, or required me to make it a deeper unit. Hello, I’ve seen a lot of videos discussing guide rail squares from companies like TSO. They are made to support different track saw rails and I think it would be cool to make something out of wood and also with a 3D printer to see if you can do it at a cheaper price or if it’s still better just to buy one. The video could show how you would plan to insure that the wood version is square or a true 90. The same could show how a 3D printer could possibly insure that the printed piece is also a true 90 and whether it’s more accurate. Maybe a head to head with an actual aluminum device could be added as a bonus such as the TSO version. Anyway, just an idea and both tool holders you made are great designs. Thank you for inspiring.

Contest Post. Next competition should be a wood push block or stick vs a 3d printable one. You could make that file free as well since we all need these safety items in our shops. Great video and I defiantly love you shared the fact we can have other people create the files, we do not have to be experts in everything to receive the benefits.

The 3D holders look great. I would like to see a strength comparison between the two. Looks like 3D is more than capable though.
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt 7 ай бұрын
I was thinking about that however, there are a lot of factors with strength on the 3-D printed one. The filament type used, and then the amount of infill on the print itself. The typical goal would be to use the least amount of infill needed in order to make a successful structure that is going to hold up in day-to-day use. If I was going for strength for a test however I would just solid print the thing to make it as strong as possible. However, then I’m just using a crazy amount of filament so the strength is tricky as I printed it with 20% infill it’s plenty strong for Its day-to-day use. Good luck on the giveaway.

On this one, I actually hired a freelance designer on Fiverr, I drew out the project supplied all the measurements, and then they did the 3-D modeling themselves as it was a little bit above my skill level for 3-D modeling

Good vid. How does the cost of the filament compare to the plywood? Also, how many printers do you need to get you just as fast building it with the wood?
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt 7 күн бұрын
On cost , So depends on your infill (how much empty void you leave inside vs solid plastic) I would say that vs plywood it’s a bit more expensive but it’s a different process too. I prefer woodworking but I have come to value the intricate designs and functions you can make with 3d printing and it’s not time consuming as I just hit print and walk away. I use it a lot for tool holders, dust collection (I LOVE my 3d printed Y blast gates) and organizational storage items. From a time perspective sometimes it faster sometimes it’s slower. It’s much faster on smaller jobs, like my chisel holder for me to make it beveled in the same way would take a hr or so but printed in 20min

I dont know anything about 3d printing. But, if its free, its for me! Even if ibdont win, the entry fee is free. I would like to see a floating tenon jig. Im currently in the process of building a large dining room table and will be using floating tenons. Ive built one out of wood and scraped it half way in. I have built a simpler design.
