Woodturning, Making, Creating:
In this video I show you how I made a Heart shaped, lidded, ring box out of half a Flaming box elder maple log. This project began as an entry into Shogun-Jimi's 2017 Valentine's Day Challenge, and ended with a special, hand made gift I can give to my wife on Valentine's Day. I hope you enjoy watching the process, as much as enjoyed making it! I would love to hear your comments & feedback on this project! It was a lot of fun to make & I learned a ton in the process.
Please feel free to comment, like, share, & I'd love to have you as a subscriber if you aren't already! :)

+Carrie Mercer it is some very lovely wood...its not my favorite to turn because of how soft it is...it doesn't turn cleanly...but if you are patient and take your time with it...the grain is worth the extra effort.

Michael Zurcher I'm just barely getting into lathe turning. And have always loved wood working. Do you know where I can find good sources of wold?
@MichaelZurcher

I find all mine locally. We have a lot of wooded areas around where I live and people are always cutting trees down around here. Or sometimes after storms. Other than finding wood, there are also lumber stores that have pre- Kiln dried woods, or you can even try ebay for wood turning woods if you don't have any local hardwoods. Hope that helps!

That is Real Nice ! Will give a similar design a try, especially if I can find a similar piece of Flaming Box Elder. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. BTW, I don't use a fire pit until later. For the first while, I put my misadventures on my "Wall of Shame" to remind myself that haste makes waste, that measuring twice has value and that checking blanks for weak spots improve my chances of success and diminish my chances of injury from flying wood :-) So far, so lucky with respect to the injuries.

+ManCraftingTM thanks for checking it out! I got the idea while I was turning a different natural edge bowl and it was almost naturally a heart shape...so I thought...hmmm maybe accentuate it. Box elder does have some awesome color!

Awesome!!!! Is box elder easy to turn?
@MichaelZurcher
@MichaelZurcher 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it's pretty easy turning wood, but sometimes it can be soft in spots due to the box elder bettles that infest the tree and cause the red coloration. Sharp tools and you are all set!

No, I used some mini carbide carving tips. I do have some small router bits for the dremel but would never use them without using my dremel station. Thanks for watching!
