One of the nicest bowls I’ve seen. Would like to see more coverage of cutting the slot, showing what bits you used, how much hand sanding it took. Very smooth flowing lines throughout. Thanks for posting!
@MichaelZurcher Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That means alot! I used a dremel bit to do the initial carve, then moved over to a small hand saw for getting the bulk of the cuts, then back to the dremel to refine them. Then A TON of hand sanding the edges...staring from 80 grit and worked up to about 600 grit, then buffed with carnuba wax. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!

I made a jig to hold the bowl after turning, made of wood, having a plexiglass top containing two slot patterns. I use a router with a .25” up cut bit to cut the slot. I think I’ll try the Dremel idea to soften the edges of the slot, and perhaps cut down on some of the hand sanding. If you wish, send me a message and I’ll send a picture of it to you. I enjoy seeing the work of other turners and “compare notes”. Would love to connect. Kind regards.

@@turn2woodturning neat! I never thought to use a router but I can see how that would work! I got a pneumatic saw which works pretty well. I'd love to see your setup! I haven't been in the shop in a long time...I really need to get back in there...hoping soon!

😂...I must admit, I'm a 'fat pen hater'...but I've been called oh so much worse 🤣. Alumnite resin is only workable for 7 minutes before it cures?
@morgancalvi66752 жыл бұрын
However the pen is still fat.
@MichaelZurcher2 жыл бұрын
depends on the type of resin you buy...some is 2 minutes...I use alumilite slow which is 12 minutes before it begins to cure
@MichaelZurcher Жыл бұрын
@@morgancalvi6675 I'm sorry you were offended, it was a response to my previous video where I got alot of people complaining about how fat the pen was so I made another one that was slimmer. It was not directed with any ill will or harsh intent more as a joke to all the previous people that commented saying the pen was way too fat.

Thank you for reusing...appreciate it dude. But be careful because older skateboards have asbestos between the board and the grip tape. While they made a come back as of late, they went out of use a few years back because of the asbestos thing. At least in some parts. Curious about something...when people are working with resin, it's an exothermic reaction...so for those that use waste blocks glued on...if a heat gun removes the item from the waste block...wouldn't an exothermic reaction of the resin make the hold not stay on the waste block?

Great FYI here: a while back, French Canadians, who are derogatorily called 'frogs', took offense and raised hell...so the Canadian government passed a law saying businesses with the word 'frog' in it, or things that had 'frog' in the title (like frog tape and frog rock)...had to change their name. It never stuck. The show 'Canadian Pickers' constantly talks about finding a good frog rock album. Moral of the story...just don't be a jerk.

Just FYI to dog owners: black walnut is toxic to them...even if you don't let them in the shop while you are turning...the shavings can be on your clothes or hair or you could have walked on something sticky and it's on your shoes.

Love the way you did the final foot though. Many wood turners just do them flat. Plates and bowls have a ring, inside and out.

I have some really really dry pine cones. Can I just use them without stabilizing them? They are like 5 yrs old
@MichaelZurcher4 жыл бұрын
you can, but I found that stabilizing gives a better finish and cuts down the likely hood of air bubbles forming...I tried it in the beginning but found I got much better and more consistent results when stabilizing
@kandiecandelaria14234 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelZurcher I don’t have a way to stabilize them though. How else can you stabilize without a vaccum set up?
@MichaelZurcher4 жыл бұрын
@@kandiecandelaria1423 I don't know o any other way to do it...I have seen people make smaller setups with a cheap harbor freight vac pump and some mason jars, not saying I recommend that...but there are videos out there showing how to set that up. other than that, you can make them without stabilizing, just get some thin CA glue and when you finish sanding let that CA soak into the pinecone....then resand and finish. The stabilizing helps prevent moisture from reabsorbing into the cone once it's finished ...the ones I have made without stabilizing tend to "swell" and get a raised surface where the pinecone is...and I don't know if it might eventually separate or crack the resin over time
