When using these kinds of planes, you should be starting from the other end of the board, elongating the grove/tongue in every other or so pass. That way it also requires much less force. Roy Underhill has some great videos showing this, and they are available for free on the PBS website (look for woodwrightsshop).

Is this tool limited to a specific board thickness? Im pretty sure i bought one specifically for this video a couple years ago and never even used the damn thing. So im getting back into it and would like to use it but i noticed theres no adjustment other than spinning the fence around and the tongue part looks like the board would have to be a very specific size. Like a ¾" board wouldnt fit this. And then that makes me wonder, if you wanted to put a tongue and groove on something thicker, then wouldn't you have to choose the side of the board thats been squared first? Im talking about a board thats slightly too thick for this tool. Which side would the fence be on? Does this make sense? I have to measure mine and come back for actual dimensions of the wood i have versus the tool

It would be nice if he had touched on this some.

New to woodworking, trying to make a small shelf to hold computer hard drives. I would like the build to be clean, and I think making a tongue on the edge of a board would work great. But I’m wondering is it possible to use this same technique to make a groove on the surface of the board

What is that kind of plane called? And can I use chisel to make both the tongue and groove.
@athmostafa2462 Жыл бұрын
It's called Stanley 48 , you can make tongue and groove with a chisel but it takes ages I think 😅.

Great video, sadly I don't think hand planes are appreciated for their ability in joinery, preparing stock or finishing .....very sad, but I think a lot of that falls on lack of knowledge of them so videos like this are very beneficial for someone new to woodworking.

Agreed, Many I think are too focused on the completion rather than the journey (Me included)

Barrett Hageman I also agree. I used to be in such a hurry to mill the boards through my machines. But now I love, love, love the process of actually working the wood. Wood Milling vs. Wood Working!

Is there a way to adjust? My tongues are too big for the grooves, is this common? Is it just shoulder plane work to get it to fit?
@WoodAndShop4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you got it. Use a shoulder plane and take a pass, then test, and repeat if necessary.

I just checked and the Stanley no. 48 is selling for $80-300. Some are rusted and they’re asking for $300. Others are refinished and are going for $80. So yeah they’ve gone up in 10 years.
