Thanks James, both yourself and Paul Sellers have shown and convinced me, that with effort and passion we can do it with hand tools. The old fellas hand tools they have passed on allows us an opportunity to continue a craft that is legacy, joy and fulfillment Cheers Howie

I like my Stanley 46 planes. Expensive to get a blade set and a little tricky to sharpen by hand though.

Hi. My take on the sale of the 71 is sell the new one as it will be of greater value and will have a bigger interest

I used this joint to build in my living room a frame for mirror after watching your window joinery series. It was very challenging to keep all the corners 90 and keep the all the joint tight well for first try it was a good job although 2 if them were not tight they were very very close so it's hard to notice ( only I can notice it), perfect is boring 😊!

Sell the old 1 ,it has star status 👍

Easy question. Sell the mint one, since you are a user and will kill its value by using it. It seems unlikely you will pack it away and bring it out from time to time to admire it. It is a beautiful tool and package.

Does it really matter what they're called, we can all see what they are.

It generally doesn't really matter. But a lot of people like to get mad about it and start arguments.

That is my understanding but Diston didn't sell that much in Europe and the uk.

Yes. There is a California to collecting organization. There is a Pacific Northwest tool collecting organization. And there's one for the Rockies too. They don't hold quite as many but they're always looking for someone to host a new one. You can find out more on www.handtoolfinder.com

I thought a shooting board was simple, couple of pieces of wood, very carefully assembled tool. You have a special plane, a special track, and some kind of a miter gadget. That doesn't look simple or cheap?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
Nope. It is not cheap at all. Don't get me wrong you can make a simple shooting board with a regular plane and it will do the job okay. But I've always found doing it freehand is easier and faster than an okay shooting board. I never used any of my shooting boards very much until I got one with all the bells and whistles.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo where do you find a plane like that, is that an antique?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
this one is an antique. but they are hard to find and often cost more then the new ones. and the new ones work better in my book. the two most common ones are from Veritas and Lie Nielsen, but I think Wood River makes one too.

Any chance you could copy the instructions. I recently bought a 71 in its original box as well. All the parts. Not the original packing material. I don’t think it was ever used, not sharpened and no usage marks. I did not get the instructions. I bought this router plane to use it, I have had great instructors like yourself but still would love to see the original paperwork. In fact if you have the original paperwork from any stanley hand plane I would love to see that as well. I have searched the internet but had no luck. Based on things you have said in the past about using the tools and not being attached to them I recommend you put the new one on “can I have it”. Why? well for some lucky person it would be like Christmas morning. It would be complete, unused and amazing. You on the other hand would be swapping an old friend for a new friend which is way less satisfying in my opinion.

I'm thinking that's the direction I'm leaning. If you send me an email I can send you pictures of the manual.
