My grandparents had a 60 acre farm with 9 kids. My parents eventually build a house 200 yards from their house. My grandfather passed when I was 5 so for years I would go down to gram’s and cut her grass and spend hours drinking coffee, eating cookies and every once in a while eating her canned dill pickles. One Christmas she bought me and my cousin (who also likes pickles) a glass pickle ornament for Christmas. She has too since passed, but ever time I hang it in the tree I think of her. Thanks for coming up with this carving. I think I’ll make a few for my family in remembrance of her. Thanks Doug!

Doug, I have been carving since January 2022 at the Huntsville Alabama senior center. Our instructor was Deward "Dee" Boyd. I say was because he passed in October. What a loss to many. Since then I have watched many of you videos and you are an inspiration. Thanks for all your hard work.

Thank you for this video. We’ve had a Christmas pickle hanging on our tree for years and years, but we never knew the story behind the Christmas pickle. Every year our family gets a new Christmas pickle for the tree. This year I got to make our Christmas pickle and it’s now everyone’s favorite Christmas pickle and even more so because now we know the story and tradition behind it. Thanks again for the wonderful story and for sharing your gift so we can learn from you! Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁 🥒🥒🥒😁

Very helpful video, I carved 2. I used an eye screw at first, it looked awkward. Then I drilled the hole longer and inserted a small cotter pin, glueing it with a drop of Gorilla glue. Made for fun, quick projects giving one to my Godson’s child as part of his birthday present. Great family tradition. I really enjoy your videos.

Learned of the German tradition last week. Lived in Germany 7 years hadn't heard of the tradition. One of my daughters asked if I would take up the tradition. So I just wondered if you, by any chance, had carved a pickle and lo and behold you have taken up the tradition too. You made my day. I know what a pickle looks like but to see you knock one out, what can I say but thanks again Doug for another great tutorial. Oh! And a Merry Christmas Doug to you and your family.

Great tutorial and Finnegan is a natural 👍 Alex made these last year & I don't know how true the history is behind hiding the pickle in the Christmas tree, but every German I've talked to said they never did this as a child. Our friends kids loved trying to find them. They blend in really well once deep inside a decorated Christmas tree.

A tip on the hook - I use fish hooks - gold - and clip off the bend to the sharp into the trash. The eye and shaft are then inserted with super glue into a like sized hole drilled by my Dremel tool with a tiny diamond 'drill'. Love how you have changed in painting and give the tube to object example. Martin Oh - a stout lineman pliers or heavy cutter is needed.

Great video Doug. We have been hanging pickles on our tree for many years. However, they always been ceramic or resin. I watched this video last night. Tonight I carved 7 pickles. I have 5 more to go for my family. I don’t have the right green paint though. I’ll pick up a bottle of hunter green so I can give them out soon so they can go up on their trees this year and probably for many years to come. It has been a lot of fun making these quick little ornaments. Thank you for the great idea. Happy holidays my friend.
