Woodcraft 101: How To Make a Segmented Bowl for Beginners

Your bowl is absolutely beautiful! I have never seen that process before. It seems a little complicated, but well worth it for the awesome end result!! That finish really made the wood pop!! A nice video. For cutting the mounting recess in the base block, I ground my own dovetail chisel from a 1/2 spade bit with a hex shank. It fits into handle that I made from a 6" hex bit extension (with setscrews, btw) that was embedded in a turned ash handle. You can also make miniature special purpose chisels from spade bits, but don't make them too long.

I make segmented bowls all the time, and it doesn't take days to set up. I designed a fixture for my tablesaw, and I can set it up in about 5 or 10 minutes. I have a cnc, but I prefer to cut on my tablesaw.

Great lesson on segmented turning. I would be nice if the sanding plate didn't have any run-out...it wobbles like crazy. that's why it sounds intermittent when the sanding first starts. That sanding plate can be shimmed until it is right on. I wonder just how exactly flat those segments are when he is done sanding. For those who don't have the fancy chuck for sanding, the segments can also be held by hand. and coarse sand paper is suggested so it doesn't load up from the glue. scraping glue off first before sanding or doing a good job of wiping wet glue off would help keep this from happening.

Thanks! Run-out should not be an issue with regards to sanding. The run-out would cause vibration but the flatness of the face is important.

@@CraftsmansLegacy If the sanding plate were at a 45 deg angle, then it would sand a 45 deg cone on the facing piece. So anything other than true zero run-out in the plate will not provide a flat surface. For my wood faceplate, I used a machinist dial indicator and shimmed with pieces of paper to get it dead on. This can also be done with just a feeler like a pencil or piece of metal rubbing on the plate.

I'm not sure I follow. This sanding plate was at 90 not 45.

@@CraftsmansLegacy it wasn't exactly 90 deg. It wobbled which meant it wasn't exactly 90 deg. the 45 deg was an exaggeration to show what would happen if you went to the extreme, and it would sand a cone. anything except exactly 90 deg will create a taper, even though small. Now in your project it may not have been an issue (glue making up the difference) but if you are looking for FLAT sanding, then you need that sanding plate to be exactly 90 deg. when used with that sanding fixture. This would be critical with full flat pieces, like if you were making a plate, laminated with several full pieces (not donuts like you had.) And if the fixture isn't exactly parallel with the plate, then the doughnut will not be the same thickness all around. it will take off more on one side than the other. So both need to be right on.

Ahhh. I understand what you are getting at now. Yeah, I would say with a stack up like that and using plywood as the backer the chances of getting it exactly at 90d would be very difficult. The results are totally fine. Thanks again.

There is possibility off the bottom splitting due to the cross grain inherent in segmented bowls. Wish you had a video on how to make a floating bottom.
