In this video I will turn a "simple " segmented bowl using my wedgie sled. It's a good project to do for your first segmented piece. Give it a try and ask any questions you may have. Thank you.

That's a lovely bowl! My first and only attempt at segmenting was a failure - full of gaps. I'm inspired to have another go after watching this. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice! Question - I noticed you put some wipe-on poly first, then sanding sealer. Isn't the sanding sealer supposed to go first?
@omhwoodworks53066 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I did use sanding sealer first then wipe on polly. Sorry if it looked the other way around in the video.

Very cool, I really like it. I have been turning bowls for a while, but I am just now getting ready to start turning segmented bowls and learning about it before I start. Is there a reason you used a 4 segment bottom rather than a 6 segment bottom like the rest of the bowl? Thanks

Very nice! I'm planning to attempt a segmented bowl and need to make or buy a wedge sled. Did you make or purchase your wedge template? Did you make or purchase your wedge sled? Also, the angled piece that directs your cutoffs away from the blade, how did you achieve that? Is it affixed to your throat plate? Thank you!

Go to Segeasy.com. They have free plans for building a wedgie sled and they explain the angled piece in some of their videos. They also sell wedgies for setting up proper angles for cutting segments.

I really like the combination of Zebra wood and walnut. The Zebra wood really sets it it apart. I want to make one and have a couple questions. What is the diameter and height of the bowl? Making the bottom ring as you did will that prevent splitting and what is the base thickness. Thanks and keep the chips coming. Glen
@omhwoodworks53062 жыл бұрын
The bowl ended up to be around seven inches diameter and about three inches tall. Making the bottom ring out of the four pieces does make it stronger and should keep it from splitting and the base was made out of 4\4 stock that is usually more than 3\4 to just under an inch. I know I just turned it to flat. Sorry I did'nt get back to you sooner thank you for watching!

Very nice job, I particularly like the proportionality of your rings. Could you share the dimensions of the rings and segments you used. Thanks.
@omhwoodworks53066 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dee. The bottom is just four squares glued up, the middle ring is 6 segments cut at a 30 degree angle. The board was about 2.3 inches wide, the segment is about 4.6 inches at the widest. The middle ring has straight cut pieces between each segment that are about .25 thick. The top ring is also 6 segments, with a 2.5 inch wide board. the long edge of the segment is about 5.75 long.

Thanks for the cell phone info. on what angles to use! Is there a cell phone location on cutting staves?

Thanks for the video. You did a great job and I want to try one. A glue-up tip if you don't mind. To keep things from moving around or you might say slipping around, you can sprinkle some table salt on the glue. You don't want to put a lot of salt on it. I have been doing this for years with no problems.
