Another option when finding this issue is to drill from the front in the "red" mouth. Drill the hole almost to the tail 2/3 of the way maybe. Then plug the front hole and that should be less noticable. Just thinking but you would have to be careful not to weaken the front eyelet area or it might pull out.

Perhaps you needed to dry the wood out ? Making sure all the moisture out is part of it too

You are correct, that can be a factor. I do dry my wood as best as I can nowadays by buying it months in advance and letting it cure in the shop (I happen to live in a really dry environment.) I haven't had this problem anymore since I started individually ballasting each lure. The biggest lesson I learned was not to take shortcuts. Thanks for your comment and support!
