I like your creative solution of not having a lathe. Plus your craftsmanship is amazing. One question. Why not just use old broom handles or wooden dowels for your poppers? I’m new to popper making, hence the question. Thanks again for sharing.
@zimmtex2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your interest! You could use an old broom handle if you wanted. It might have a pretty coarse grain which would make carving more difficult. Good luck to you on your lure making journey!

Nice work on the Popper 👍 That little telescopic fish rod looks handy, especially for kayak fishing. I used to own a great Pike/pier telescopic rod but ended up snapping it trying to power cast a heavy weight meant for a beach caster; 4 or 5 ounce but I can't remember which as it was so long ago. Again, Nice work 👍

Love you Popper Lure and paint job. What size split rings and trebles did you use for this wooden popper ? Going to try my hand at making one. Thanks
@zimmtex3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I believe I used size 4 hooks and 5mm split rings for these lures. Best wishes on your build!

Just a my experience and suggestion on fishing poppers... they can be fished any way anyone wants to fish them and catch fish. You said you were able to see the fish following the bait but not committing; so, may I suggest, slowing the popping act "painfully" down? Also, when you do retrieve, you don't always have to give the popper an aggressive yank. The noise is more for attracting, once it's seen, it's almost like a playground bully (which bass are), they don't want anything to do at times with something that might fight back. Although sometimes when for example a bass is on a bed protecting it, you could put a hook on a log, splash it like a Volkswagen hitting the water, and catch fish. Try it sometime.

Thanks for your insight; I will definately give that a try the next chance I get! That reminds me of a phenomenon I have heard about with large glide baits. Those are typically fished slowly and are often followed by bass. They say that every once in a while you should make it glide hard to one side to make the lure 'look' behind itself. This often induces a strike. Its possible that a bass is forced to make a quick decision to strike before its prey can get away knowing that it has been seen. I love discussing fish behavior; awesome stuff. Thanks again!

Line your vice with pine and you can carve a groove to limit damage.

i bought the vice guards. they are plastic with magnets in them. i found out, accidentally, that they give a little bonus. they have cross-hatching on them, for grip. well, when you tighten down your wood lure, that hatching puts a nice scale pattern into the wood.

@@zzz7zzz9 Thats cool, sometimes you have a happy accident like that and it changes the way you do things.

Hi there, I’m a bait maker myself! I love the videos. I was just wondering what 91% alcohol does in the clear coat?
@zimmtex3 жыл бұрын
Hello! The alcohol thins the clear coat some, but it also remives a lot of the bubbles. In my more recent videos, I use a better epoxy that doesn't require additives. Thanks for watching!

Good stuff!! What kind of chisels did you use? (Skew, scraper, etc?). I'm interested in trying this but have read that certain chisel types are difficult to sharpen .... Thanks for the inspiration
@zimmtex4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your support! I bought an 8 piece lathe chisel set off of Amazon. There are really only three that I use: skew, round nose scraper, and parting tool. These three shouldn't give you any trouble to sharpen. Good luck with your project!

Do whatcha gotta do, I suppose. Have ya moved up to an actual lathe yet?
@zimmtex4 жыл бұрын
I did, actually. The drill press worked well enough for small poppers, but the lathe can handle bigger things like spooks and saltwater poppers. Thanks for watching!
