You make all this stuff look to easy. I am getting ready start a mold I have to make tonight and I know I am going to run into 15 problems nobody has covered yet. But i have to say, you videos have made me slow down a bunch, I used to love to race into a project and just deal with whatever popped up. Now I try and avoid issues if I can. Thanks!

I would apply JB Weld like Bondo and sand to 1200 grit then polish with a Drimmel wool buffing pad. Remember to keep it slow so you don't burn it.

I’ve been turning and carving my own fishing lures for many years. You have masterfully brought this craft to a new level. Questionable whether I’d want to fish with these pieces or add them to my collection in my Outdoors Man Cave. I subscribed and look forward to applying your art and techniques to my lures. Thanks so much for sharing and posting. Keep up the great work.

Outstanding craftsmanship..It’s more a piece of art than a lure. I’d hate to see it smashed by a tuna or big kingfish !!!

What kind of wood is that?
@zimmtex18 күн бұрын
I believe this one is basswood. I also like tupelo these days because both are nice to carve. However, you can make a lure out of just about anything.

Yes, it acts as a sealer but it also hardens the outer shell.

Hi. I got a question. Will a resin lure withstand the fight with a tuna or dorado? And will it last if it does?
@zimmtex18 күн бұрын
A resin lure can take a lot of abuse and keep working. The paint may get knocked off, but the lure will keep working.

You should look into Kilz spray. Its a primer/sealer instead of gray primer then white paint over it. It will save some time.

I pour lead directly into the holes in (wooden) lures. Works well. Needs some adjustments to account for the buoyancy of the wood removed by drilling, of course, if the desired ballast weight is determined before drilling.
@zimmtexАй бұрын
I have done a good bit of direct pour as well. Can't say if I like one better than the other. Thanks for sharing!

Is the fan explosion proof?
@zimmtexАй бұрын
I'm not sure, probably not. The only 'explosion proof' fans I have ever found cost thousands of dollars. I did build a completely metal duct alk the way to the outside. In any case, I'm not really worried about acrylics and inks.

The thickness of the clear coat is somewhat worrying. I think it's going to be enough only to protect the paint. If the lure will be used to fish for toothy fish like muskie or northern pike (which would be natural to assume given the size of the lure), then they can easily bite through the coating, allowing the water to seep into the wood, which can make it swell and eventually destroy it. I coat mine (intended exclusively for pike fishing) with three layers of epoxy, weighing about 10-12 grams in total on a lure this size, and I'm not sure that even that is enough. It remains to be tested, but I already verified that two thin layers of epoxy weren't enough: one pike attack, and the lure had to be repaired. In addition, I now soak the wood with epoxy (it takes in about 4-6 grams) before priming and painting for an extra bit of protection against water ingress should the final clear coat fail.
@zimmtexАй бұрын
This KBS is pretty tough, though probably not enough for pike & muskie. I actually made this one for largemouth bass. I'm thinking that I would make a resin bait for pike & muskie.
@s_s-g4dАй бұрын
Impressive quality of the side to side action. Nice! I've made only one jointed swimbait so far, and while it swims nicely enough on a steady retrieve, it won't properly zigzag on twitches, instead it tends to keep turning to just one side. I guess I need to try a different shape and maybe a different position of the line tie ring.
@zimmtexАй бұрын
Thank you! The joint or line tie could be slightly misaligned causing it to favor one side. I bet with some tweaking, you can get it working.

What airbrush and nozzle size do you use for createx ?

I have a couple of airbrushes, a Master and an Iwata. The Iwata is set up with a 0.35mm for more detailed work and the Master has a larger 0.5mm nozzle.

Can I use something other than wire for hook eyelets? I already painted and put resin on my lure… it was my first one 😂
@zimmtex2 ай бұрын
Glad to hear you are interested in making lures! Yes, you can use stainless steel screw eyes or you can still use twist wire. Either way you're going to have to drill the holes. Just make sure to seal around the eye with a little bit of resin.

Amazing tips on the foiling! What kind of epoxy do you use? Acrylic paints with water based epoxy? How do you apply the epoxy without the paint wrinkling or running off?
@zimmtex2 ай бұрын
I think I used East Coast Resin on this one but you could also use Truecoat epoxy or KBS diamond clear. Yes, I use acrylic paint but I make sure to let it completely dry and it isn't a problem. I have links to most of the products I use on my website here: www.ZimmtexLures.com/productlinks

Hey, Mike. Did you make this one out of wood or foam? The grain on the block is virtually invisible, so I can't tell. I'm also curious whether, during water-testing, you tried SLOWING DOWN the retrieve. If so, did this design perform like a true wake bait? All the best, Chris (in Maine)
@zimmtex2 ай бұрын
Hello! I made this one out of Tupelo which is why it's so clear. I did try this lure at all speeds, but the really slow footage didn't turn out well (blurry, etc.) so I didn't use it. It did perform as a wakebait but I really like the mid to fast speeds more. Thanks for watching and commenting!
