Nice work and video. What epoxy did you use. You said slow cure but different brands behave differently and cure to slightly different stiffness too. I’m not experienced but I know to respect the dark art of epoxy. You avoid bubbles so well. Would really like to know more. Thanks. Oh. And another aspect. You were doing it from a very small portion in a container. But seemed to get the next small batch going really quickly. How did you do that? Was there a dispenser that actually worked or did you have a cool little process that streamlined portioning and mixing?
@wulkie Жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! I had very good result with a locally sourced resin. It might be produced in the EU. Epiphen RE 4020 with DE 4020 hardener. But any decent quality resin would work...

@@wulkie thanks for the incredibly prompt reply. I have used Mass epoxy in the past. I liked it but not experienced enough to say anything about it really. Don’t want to make those mistakes though as so much work builds up to the epoxy stage. Did you just measure it with pouring from the containers! Possibly not spending a full 2 min mixing slowly!?

Hey captain ! Really neat and only video that shows how to lay two layers of glass in one go. Exactly what I was looking for. I observed that you may have used some staples and some weights to hold the fiberglass in place. What are your top suggestions on avoiding air bubbles between the layers ? How do you hold the layers in place while you apply the epoxy ? Thanks -
@wulkie4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sandeep, the only reason I had to hold the fiberglass in place is because of its weight and the angle. You should not worry too much about that. once you start applying epoxy both layers will stay fixed. Make sure you start from the middle and work you way out towards the ends. In order to get rid of the air bubbles you normally need a special roller that i didn't had. Instead I used my fingers to press out the air wherever needed. but that was not much. Far more important than anything here is to apply at least 2 more epoxy layers after. each should be applied within less than 10 hours from the first. The best is to apply when the previous layer cured but it is still sticky. If you do this you will obtain a chemical bond between the epoxy layers, this is the strongest! Otherwise you need to sand and obtain a physical bond. it is important to apply several coats of epoxy in order to completely cover the fiberglass. hope this helps ;)

@@wulkie looks like it took me 10 months to finally get to this stage. Could you please tell me how many ounces of cloth this was ? I am doing 2 layers of 10oz, and some people are severely advising against doing both in one go.

Did you have to heat the glass to force bubbles to the surface?
@wulkie2 жыл бұрын
No, i have used the brush and then by hand. Pushing air with the fingers. I found this to be the most effective way.

How much epoxy did you use when sheathing the hull? I'm a bit concerned that I might run out half way through. Also, how much did you mix for each batch? Thanks again for posting these videos.
@wulkie3 жыл бұрын
hi, I used 4.3 kg for laminating the hull. it is 3.3 kg of resin plus 1 kg of hardener. but for sure i did not use all of it. So far, since the start of the project I bought 3 kits and i believe i shold have enough to finish her. hope this helps. A tip for laminating the hull: don't try to save resin on this. the extra 200 ml that will drip away will make it well impregnated and solid. Remember to apply another 1-2 coats of resin after the first one (4-6 hours from each other). this will fully submerge the fiber ;)

Trust me on this from making the same mistake. Theres no way he squeegeed that correctly with multiple layers of cloth at once. Especialy when using connecting pieces. Definately had some air bubbles and wrinkles thats for sure.
@wulkie4 жыл бұрын
It is a risky job indeed but i found it far more difficult to apply the cloth over a wet epoxy surface. To mitigate risks i used plenty of resin in at least 2 coats plus i sweezed the airpockets by hand = with my fingers. The result is satisfying. Do i have airpockets? Probably but they are not noticeable

Your attention to detail is ASTOUNDING! The only thing I would recommend is to lay the glass onto the resin rather than trying to soak the resin down into the glass. I've laid up thousands of pounds of fiberglass and it is much easier to get a proper, air free laminate.
@PaulLaFleur764 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if it was tough to get the resin to soak through 2 layers without wetting it first. But it looks like it soaked through ok.
@wulkie4 жыл бұрын
Yes. All good
@wulkie4 жыл бұрын
i had big challenge laying large fiberglass over wet surface. it is impossible to get rid of all air pockets and the fibre gets wrinkles. yes, ideally you could apply wettened fibre but that work only on small surfaces - my experience. BUT - most important is to apply second or third coat of epoxy to completely cover the fibre. this is most important aspect of fiberglassing ;)
