The montreal metro use wood brakes on all of the wagons. They use cherrywood impregnated for 6 months in peanut oil, then treated with ignifuging salt, they last about 80000km. Take note that there is not much distance between each stations, so lots of braking. The wood brakes have the advantage of not wearing the steel wheels and to be quiet. Since they make them on site, it is also very inexpensive. Plus, the metro being completly underground, it help to keep the toxic dust low. Wood, salt and peanut oil, all that can be eaten and eliminated by your system without any issue at all.

The Montreal Metro has used wooden brake shoes successfully for over 50 years. They use yellow birch, and soak it in peanut oil for a month and then in salt water. The advantage of the wooden shoes is quieter operation, a more pleasant smell if they need to be applied hard (most of the breaking is electrical on the motors), more environmentally friendly, and most of all very little wear and tear on the steel wheels which results in considerable savings. Note that the metro runs on rubber tires, but has steel wheels for safety, switching, and maintenance operations. The main wear on the steel wheels would be the breaks, and by using wooden breaks they generally do not need to be replaced during the lifetime of the car (40-50 years). Since the Montreal Metro is entirely underground, it would not be subject to the weather, road salt, and dirt you would find in automobile operation so those might be bigger problems for wooden breaks.
@MysticMTL5 жыл бұрын
I once visited the facility where they manufactured the wooden break shoes for the Montreal Metro. Quite an impressive set up, and the peanut oil has a distinctive smell when emergency brakes are applied.

I've wondered about this, looking at my car's brakes (an old VW Super Beetle, fitted with Ghia-style disc brakes on the front) thinking of how it would be pretty easy to put a block of wood in place of the brake pads. These were made of a low-density soft wood, probably pine (that's what 2x4s are usually) but I could imagine that if using a much harder, denser wood, something more similar to the normal brake pad material in hardness, (oak maybe?) it might actually work decently well. Not as well as regular pads, but I could imagine it might even be semi-workable. I wouldn't try it, but would be an interesting thing to ponder. I'd suggest these guys re-try it with a harder wood, see what happens.

I wonder if different types of wood would have different amounts of grip, wear, and burning points? I mean, take something soft like pine or poplar, then try something hard, like oak. Or some different like ebony or cherry or uhmmm elm. Or maybe something exotic? I really expected for that one to catch on fire fast, it lasted alot longer & worked better than i thought it would. Nice vid!

@jeffw12676 жыл бұрын
Wagons and carriages moved relatively slowly and the brakes didn't have to be applied often. That was a benefit because wood doesn't dissipate heat well. And even then, due to the slow speed of the carriage, there wouldn't be much kinetic energy to dissipate. Kinetic energy increases at a geometric rate as the speed of the vehicle increases. If carriages had gone 70 miles per hour, they'd never have been fitted with wooden brakes.

They used to use wooden Oak brake blocks on horse drawn waggons, railway wagons and steam locomotives in the old days. However as technology caused speeds to increase they used leather clad brakes (leather won't burn) and then sintered iron. For road vehicles they went from leather to asbestos until the 1980's. Modern motorcycle disc brake pads and drum brake shoes are ceramic and sintered iron

Brandon Allen Brakes work by dumping heat, ie. Converting kineric energy into heat which can be lost to the environment. If you use normal brakes excessively, they become red hot, and when they do, they don't stop the car from moving. These wooden ones will catch fire, which you know. What you don't know is that thsts likely to happen when you're going at a fair clip...

Vintage cars (mostly before 1920) often had wooden wheels rather than wire wheels. I'm not talking about brakes; just the wheels. The problem with them is that wood doesn't dissipate heat well, and the properties and performance change when the wood gets hot. Wooden breaks would overheat almost immediately and then stay hot for a long time. But in this clip, the car is being driven in the fucking Arctic which would help a little. Try driving it with wooden brakes on a 90 degree day.

I had a go-kart with wooden brakes as a kid. You just cut some 2x4 pieces about 10" (250mm) in length and bolted them on, and they'd just rub against the rear tire tread when the brake pedal was pressed.

Alright, alright. First cement tires. Now wooden brakes. I'm subscribing!

Icy road helps. If you lock the wheels the wood doesn't heat. The tires do.
