blackzed not sure if Candid camera did wooden pistons, but I loved the episode where they removed the engine and filled the engine compartment full of cigarette butts and ashes and rolled a lady down hill into a service station. The mechanic comes out and says pop the hood lady, and then he asks her if she ever dumped her ash tray. Tears were streaming down my face I was laughing so hard.

I think guys like this exist in nearly all cultures. Some are more visible than others. Granville King lost a cylinder on his Jeep while in the desert, and was able to carve a plug out of wood to fill the cylinder, removed that rod, blocked some now-unneeded oil passages, and drove it home. I know a few who may not be in the same realm, but are still good at tinkering and making-do with what most of us call 'junk', but a lot of the time they're looked down upon by 'polite' society... cuz, you know... it's just cooler to go into crippling debt to buy that new Lexus.

In Australia the Holden camira 4cylinder engines were assembled with wooden pistons. True fact. It became apparent when excessive heat caused the bonnets to fade. The wood used was balsa soaked in dingo urine mixed with Tassie devil poo. I knew the bloke who turned the pistons on a lathe. They measured under by a 100th of an inch to account for temperature expansion.

White Oak (yes wood!) was used by the Chinese as an ablative material for reentry protection on their older space vehicles. Tough stuff, no idea how it would do in that situation though :P Though wood also swells and contracts a lot more due to moisture absorption unless treated to try and prevent that. Using wood as a piston would present some rather unique challenges, over using metals. I wonder is capping them would work :P

Coat them with high temp epoxy and they should work.

Or glue a thin Al plate on the piston top. Should work.

I have heard of many engines that have run with wooden pistons. Here is the reason why they worked and why they existed. Years ago, probably in the 40s and 50s, spares were difficult to find for pre-war machines and also expensive. These older engines were low compression, low speed and relatively low output. Wood pistons won’t hold together at high rpm or cope with high performance but will be OK to get a machine sold or botch-up. I have heard some had a steel cover on top. Oak or some very hard wood could last a while. What wood did this guy make them from? Pistons aren’t subjected to constant heat as some people think, the incoming mixture is cool. If you had an oak piston and an alloy piston on the bench and subjected both to the heat of a blow-torch or oxy-propane flame you may be surprised at what a mess the alloy piston would be before you burned a hole in the wooden one.

Lignum vite wood doesn't burn or float and is hard to work even on a lathe, its used as ships bearings on propeller shafts, I'm sure that would work better, but yes an aluminium cover on the pistons would have prolonged their life.

Sorry, but Lignum vitae does burn. KZbin this video, burn test for surfpick Lignum vitae. We use to burn this when i was a child, and it burns very hot my father use to work tail end in the dockyard.

I knew a old timer who was 90 25 years ago when he died. He told me about his first car a model T and it had a bad piston so he removed it and the rod and drove a block of wood down the cylinder to plug the hole. He said that it ran fine but if he got to a steep hill he had to go in reverse because it didn’t have enough power. I have no reason to doubt his story he was a car dealer for decades and my great uncle. His brother backed up the story. That car got him in the car business.
