I didn't like the 24 hour format until I started having to use it at work. Been using it for over 8 years now and I've grown to like it. Well, at least you get to make another one with a 12 hour clock and change all the things you wanted to in this one. It's a win!

I know most digital clocks have the option for both but I honestly didn't think anyone used the 12hr version. 24hr seems the norm in the UK.

Paul Watson Yeah, don't understand when people don't like 24 hr clocks, but i never used to till the 80s, when VCRs came out. I remember my first experience with an American VCR: Trying to put the time in (it was 14:30 hrs, it kept BEEEP BEEEP at me till I realized it wanted me to put in 02:30 (!) and then select 'pm' on the next screen. Bizarre way of doing it lol

A tip for those of you who want to make this. Mount only the display in the front cavity, and connect it with wires to the board which would sit inside the cube. If you use individual 7 segment displays then drill small holes in line with the pins(parallel connection). If you use a display module(like the one in this video) then drill multiple wholes in a line and enlarge them into a grove through which a ribbon cable would go(serial connection). The one in this video used a pair of 6 pins, 12 pins in total.

Hey Bob... I made one of these a while back and what I did was use purple heart for all sides and then used purple heart veneer on the from so only one side got veneer... It worked out fine but I also had problems with brightness of screen.. and I didn't use a clock like you I now want to go back and make one like this I cut mine out from an old clock and build the box around it... Harder maybe but no soldering... but then again I had to make an access hole for setting the time... I will be remaking one with this method for sure.... Great vids keep up the good work.

I don't know how to feel about the comments. So what if he prefers the 12hr clock? It's like arguing with someone about their favorite color not being the same as yours. Then people saying that he should just buy a clock. Read the channel's name. It's simple English, must be easy to understand. Few people appreciate the content. It's actually a nice step by step tutorial. He teaches but also likes to learn from other people and talks about how he could've done better if his project didn't turn out so well. *GOOD QUALITY STUFF RIGHT THERE.* I don't think I'll make one though, I just like to watch people make stuff. See what I did there? Anyway, more power to your channel!

OK. Here's my veneer tip. Apply plain wood glue to both the veneer sheet and to the base material, trying to achieve an even thin film and allow them to dry to the touch (not sticky). Now you can position them perfectly. When you have the veneer positioned like you want, place a piece of paper over the the veneer and use a laundry iron to set it permanently. The heat from the iron causes the moisture in the wood to steam up and reactivate the glue.

Another way I like to do is minus 2 hours from any time after 12:00, then the second digit is the hour... This might be a bit hard to understand but for example: if its 19:00, you minus 2 hours, making it say 17:00. The second digit is 7. Therefore its 07:00 pm :D
@JayMenske
@JayMenske 9 жыл бұрын
droid1312 Yeah, that works, but to get the exact time without the hour before the 2nd number you have to minus 12.

droid1312 Same thing, really. You subtract 2 first, so 19 turns into 17 and then you subtract the remaining 10. In the end, you still subtracted 12, but it's easier to think of it like you described.

+I Like To Make Stuff Here is an idea: put a 5 v battery inside the hollow cube or if u don't have a 5v get a different battery and use a 5 v switch that takes 5-9 volts and lowers it to 5v and wire the battery up to the clock(have the battery be Li-Ion so you can recharge it) and strip the wires on a USB Micro female port (the one on the android phone) and connect the negative to the battery and have diodes on all the wires to prevent feed back. Then mount the USB port into the back so you could use a USB male to USB micro female to you can charge the clock off of an apple or android USB charger for convenience and have a Voltage Indicator on the back and have a switch hooked up to it so you turn it on only when you need it. Wha Bam! A battery powered USB wooden cock!(if u want to go MLG next level put 5v solar panels on the Top so u have a portable solar powered USB clock) (and for Super MLG have another USB port so you can charge stuff off of it) The end

+P0WERBUBBLE You would need a better clock kit for that. If you turned off a basic kit like this via a switch, it would not remember what time it was when you turned it on again. Also the charger doesn't need to be an apple or android charger, any USB charger will be 5v because that is the spec for USB. The voltage indicator would be pointless because there is no need to monitor voltage when it will only accept and produce one voltage. It's not exactly sensitive equipment. Charging stuff off of it would work fine except for things like Apple products where you would need a data signal or shorted data wires for it to charge. Rather than overcomplicating this it would probably be a lot better to just work a cheap power pack/portable charger into the box. All the charging circuitry will be done for you, you just need to add the solar.

+John Arne Nergård This is matter of time zone. If you live in America you learn to use an 12hour clock. So you get used to 1pm or 1am. in this case the PM and AM makes all the difference. I leanbred ot use an 24 hour clock. So i got taught those numbers 1 to 24. 00:00 t 06:00 is night, 06:00 to 12 is morning and so on. They get tought that am is morning or night, pm is afternoon or evening. Dependin on when it's used. The way i got taught 24 hour clock is simply adding 12 to the number. for axample 18:00 = 6 o clock. 6 + 12= 18. Thus 18:00. we als don't sat six thirty. we say half seven. So again it's how you learned it and what you preffer to use.

I Know, I know. But if I had learned the 12-hour clock, and then realized at a point in my life: "Wow! There is a 24-hour clock out there, people! 24-hours! Thats TWICE what we have!"... Well, I would have changed... ;)

Hi Bob! Thank you very much for your videos. I'd like to comment on veneer glueing. I know the other way how to do it. Put pretty thick glue layer on your veneer before cutting it to pieces and wait for the glue to dry, just for an hour or so, for it not to be sticky. Than cut your veneer to necessary pieces, put one piece to it's place and press it with hot iron. Veneer beautifully sticks. Repeat it with all other pieces. The advantage of this method is that you can precisely put veneer in it's place and avoid all unglued places.

I've not had the greatest of successes with veneering, but have found using mdf/ply to be a good substrate. Using a flush trim router bit can help get a good edge, if your careful at the end grain, and get a good bond on the edges helps, as does trimming close to the edge with a knife first. Definitely agree with you leaving the face till last to help hide the imperfections. Would like to try this as a project! :-) Thanks for sharing! !

I got this diy clock from ebay, there weren't instructions in English either. Even though I would prefer to utilize the space in the box (e.g., as drawer, or open storage) and I'm not sure if I'd like to cover the display, I love the simple woodworking part of it and the concept you presented. Your channel is awesome. For everyone with such clock, this is what I found on the internet : A - Hours (Military Time) B - Minutes C - Hourly Chime D - Alarm 1 On/Off E - Alarm 1 Hours F - Alarm 1 Minutes (Military Time) G - Alarm 2 On/Off H - Alarm 2 Hours (Military Time) i - Alarm 2 Minutes I don't know what it means yet, lol.

Looks pretty awesome. The only thing I would have done differently is put the clock a bit deeper and then fit a plexiglass or some other clear piece on top of it. I'm not sure how strong the veneer is, but it looks like there are a lot of areas where nothing is supporting it over the clock.

Hi Bob, Great channel you got there! I have definitely some advice for veneer. Next time you just need some (white) wood glue. Brush or roll both sides with glue (so veneer and the piece of wood you like to veneer) and let it dry for around 15-20 minutes. In the meantime, heat up an iron (without steam!). If both pieces are dried, just simply at both pieces together and heat it with the iron, this reactivates the glue. The trick here is to push pretty firm (but not to hard!) and not to burn the wood. Saw the overhang of you off like you normally do. That's it, what can I say, Bob's your uncle! :-)

hey man nice job on the clock. i have done veneers before i found it worked really well to use a plunge router with a end bearing straight bit to cut the veneer back to the surface then after that's done on all side use a file to get the edges perfect.

Cool concept! You'll get about 7 different opinions on what glue to use for veneer. I don't think it makes much difference on something this size. Titebond makes a "cold press" glue that is designed for it. It's really runny. If you put the glue on the box rather than the veneer it may be easier as the glue makes the veneer curl up.

Nice idea :D Next level would be to make a server room in the middle of your home with open wiring and no insolation, then you can hang all sorts of smart appliances with lights right on the plywood so it shows through on the other side. And with no hassle connecting wifi or power neatly.. maybe some sort of touch screen works too. Might try it myself someday

One option you can do that may make for an interesting effect is cut some cross grain veneer and use that for at least the area with the clock display. For instance some woods like oak have thousands of open tubules if you look at a thin end grain sample of the wood. You can easily see this by cutting off a thin (about 1/8" piece) and looking through it at a light source.
