In this second part of my build aimed at people who have never built a wooden model ship before, we build up the frame by working through adding the bulkheads and false deck, finishing with the transom.

I definitely need to come back and re-watch these videos as I build - and recommend to all first time builders to do the same. I thought I had the false deck test fit and scoped out, so I glued it. Feeling something didn’t look quite right, I went back to review part 2. Sure enough, I was in trouble! Jason’s suggestion of filing the bulkhead notches was a solution I would not have come up with on my own. Of course in my panic to remove the false deck before the glue set I snapped 2 stern frames. But no worries, I think I repaired my error (fingers crossed). Another lesson learned and I have gained increased admiration for and trust in Jason’s guidance as I fumble through the adventure of my first wooden ship build. 😊

MY 1st NEAR DISASTER with Sherbourne. Jason, I mentioned my near disaster in the comments of your most recent video. It happened while I was putting the chamfer on bulkheads 2 and 4. I cracked them - and was able to repair them. The way the MDF is laser cut on these pieces leaves little material holding the starboard and port sides together. You can see want I mean if you go to time 56:57 in part one of the build. There’s a clear picture of bulkhead 2 in that shot. I hope I’m the only beginner to have this problem, but it would be great to share these types of misadventures with the beginners like me who are attempting Sherbourne as a first build. I’d be happy to help with this if you think it’s worth pursuing. But first, rest up my friend.

As others have said in previous comments, this is an excellent introduction to wooden ship modelling. I've been watching videos for years, absolutely enthralled by how utterly gorgeous they look when completed, but the build process was a complete mystery, and very intimidating. After watching a few of your tutorial videos, suddenly it's become clear and achievable! I've made a lot of plastic models over the years, and I'm quite comfortable with basic woodwork, so I'm feeling quietly confident that this should be doable! I suspect that the HM Sherbourne kit will be arriving quite soon! Enormous thanks for producing your videos - you've demystified the build process and made it accessible and achievable, and that's the mark of an excellent teacher.

Hi Jason. I haven’t considered doing a wooden ship kit before as they looked too complex. But this is an excellent series for a newbie and I am looking forward to future episodes. And also seeing the progression up the complexity curve (as per your response to another poster).

Hi Jason, Great video. I was getting really nervous when you were pushing the false deck into place. I was sure something would break. If course, then I remembered, you have done this before and know what you are doing. Thanks for sharing. I'll be watching for part 3. Have a great day. Jeff

THANK YOU so much for this. Ive attempted to build a wooden model in the past and it was just too much. Dont know if I went in at a too high a level or Im just useless. Whatever the reason, a video like this can only help and perhaps Ill have the confidence to attempt another in the future.

As a relatively new builder I truly appreciate the time and attention to detail to the various steps of the building process. Vanguard does not ship to Canada so I'm searching around to see if I can purchase the kit via the US. Thank you again for sharing your building skills.

Hi there Mr Modelkit Stuff. I got a quick question, I recently got my 1st airbrush n I'm a bit lost about what you lub on your airbrush or if you even need to and was hoping you could help. I've watched a few vids and some cover everything in lub n others hardly touch it so I'm a bit wary about what to do. By the way it's just a basic Gaahleri 39

There are lubrication instructions with your airbrush however I prefer to rub a little needle juice on the needle. I do have a complete guide to airbrushing for absolutely beginners, take a look in my playlists one of the videos deals with cleaning and lubricating, I cannot recall which

I keep finding other things to comment on with regard to your beginners guide to model shipbuilding. I’ve long been hoping a channel would pick up the baton. Well, you’ve done it. Vanguard models grades its kits in order of complexity. Now that you appear to have some kind of a collaborative arrangement with Chris at Vanguard, any chance of making this a continuity series. Following on from HMS Sherbourne, building another kit from the range at the next level of complexity, then the next etc.. I received my delivery of the Sherbourne this a.m. and am following your build-along with great interest. Thank you.

Hi Paul, you will be pleased to know that is exactly my plan. I will be building two kits from each skill level I have carefully chosen them to build new skills as we go, all the way up to the Indy. I will not say which ones as I know he is releasing more and so may change the plan

Hi Jason this s really looking rather fun. I have reiterated to the wife that funds towards my purchase of the kit sometime in the new year, and my Birthday in February would be appreciated We obviously see the shortened time frames but is it possible you can give us an idea of your timeframes for each step, so as to get an idea of how long each step really stakes. As beginners we are going to be slower than your good self, but time indicators would be useful so we can budget time for each step? A great part 2 and I look forward to part 3

@@markoldreive interesting thought on times. All in all you will need around 50 hours build time plus drying time, planing time most of what you have seen is real time this first few steps is quite quick hour and a half across 2 days with drying time
