Nice review Jason, Can see why it costs more than the cheap version I have. Ball and socket locking arrangement and finish is far superior plus I like the idea of the base being flat rather than the G-clamp style of the one I have. Seriously thinking of upgrading. LIke you say it can be used for other things. I also use for clamping plastic kit hulls such as 1:350 Warspite. Fit a temporary false keel to hull for clamps to grab.
