In my younger days; the family would go to Idlewild for company and school picnics. We would always met at the carousel. There use to benches all the away around the carousel. This was popular place to stay when it was raining. This video brought back some good memories. Thanks

The first tune playing on the organ (in the video, after the stills) is the march "On The Beach."
@KawhackitaRag16 жыл бұрын
I recognize the opening music in your stills. It is "The Sidewalks of New York", as played on Bill Black's Wurlitzer 153 organ, on one of his "Carrousel Music" recordings.

I notice on a lot of American carousels (as opposed to British and continental ones) that the outer row of horses stand still, and it's the ones on the inner rows that gallop.
@woodencoasterfan2 жыл бұрын
There are some that gallop on the outer row but not many. I know the one at Disney’s Magic Kingdom does but that was a later alteration that was done before it was installed at the park.
@benjaminclasper30662 жыл бұрын
The second song march the wurtlizer organ is playing is “under the double eagle march (Unter dem doppeladler)” composed in 1893 by Josef Franz. (J.F) Wagner.

Notice that the snare drum on the Wurlitzan sounds amazing but you can barely hear the cymbal (exact opposite of Kennywood, where they have the snare too tight and the cymbal nice and loose

You should go back. I'm 45 and I spend literally about an hour at Idlewild's carousel every time I go (about every 2-3 years), and I live in central Texas. At Knoebel's Amusement Resort I spend lots and lots of time at their fantastic carousel, though much more on my boyhood coaster, Phoenix, which I helped to save & relocate from TX. to PA. Kennywood? Hersheypark? Anywhere with a classic hand-carved wooden carousel & band organ I spend LOTS of time at! Only wood coasters get more of my time!

Yeah, I thought that facade seemed a bit large for the Wurlitzer 103.
@CBF15 жыл бұрын
Because it originally was an Artizan D. Before some idiot replaced all the artizan pipes for 103 pipes.
@KawhackitaRag16 жыл бұрын
The first tune played by the 103 sounds like a European march, possibly German. Since Mike Kitner arranged at least one European roll for this scale, I wouldn't be surprised if it is. I have to say, that 103 sounds extremly dinky behind that giant Artizan D facade! The Artizan model D was the largest regular-production organ in the Artizan line, and the arrangements on the rolls can be wonderful. Carrousel Music offers recordings of "Lindy", a D formerly owned by Allan Stafford of PA.
@whoisthisguy72413 жыл бұрын
I never noticed before, but the caliola sits up on top of a raised platform
@KawhackitaRag16 жыл бұрын
It is high time that somebody puts a D back on a carousel where it belongs. All of the four original D organs that I know of are in private collections. Only one is trailer-mounted and occasionally seen at band organ rallies. This D facade should have an original organ chassis put back behind it, not the Wurlitzer 103 which, though a decent organ, is too small and shrill for this carousel. If you want to hear D music right now, the Frati organ at Knoebels (on KZbin) plays D rolls.

@Bryce Jones I do believe it's recorded music played over a loudspeaker system.

It sounds better when it uses lots of it's pipes like a normal Artizan D would do, rather than just one pipe at a time. Then it sounds rather poorly. It ESPECIALLY sounds bad when the wind chest is dirty.

@Donald Franklin So do I, unfortunately that is something we are sadly lacking here in Florida. We do have one classic carousel down here but it's been heavily modified by Disney. We also do have a number of modern metal carousels, some of which are quite unique. Unfortunately, there are no real band organs playing with them. The recorded band organ music just isn't the same as the real thing.

@lilybelle20000 You go me, cause I have no idea. Also the song names are listed in the description as well as in the comments left by other viewers. I do know that the tune being played on the WurliTzer Caliola is a medley of songs from some of the Broadway plays that were produced by Rogers and Hammerstein.

The Artizan has had extreme modifications. It's pretty much been turned into a Wurlitzer 103 because almost every single of the Artizan D pipes that were originally in it have been replaced by Wurlitzer 103 pipes. Little to no Artizan pipes are left in it.
