Excellent work! Loved it! Guys, note that making a sword from a unique piece of wood will make the crossguard break when sparring. Because fibers get too short, they won't handle a great deal of impact. Making a more realistic wooden sparring sword requires two pices: one for the sword and other for the crossguard (in wich the fibers showld be horizontal, not vertical, in order to handle impact).

A bit late to the party but you could also make it out of plywood - doesnt look as good but sturdy as hell
@bilbobaggins57526 жыл бұрын
Seems like you could save a lot of fuss by just drawing the sword onto the wood. You can put pencil onto the back of your printed template, then place the paper on your wood, then draw over the top. This should leave a light imprint of the printout.

Thank you for the video, I think I'm in the minority of people who not nly enjoy watching people make cool things but also want to actually make them myself (I am terrified of making investments in pricey stuff like machines and power tools). Out of curiosity, what were the brand/type of chisels you use? I've seen chisels go for very high prices and people swearing oaths of fealty to them. I bought a cheap $15 dollar set from a craft store and tried it on bass wood, and I can't seem to tell if I'm just super weak or if they're pretty bad since it takes a'lot of effort to get the tiniest bit of wood off.
@grung7014 жыл бұрын

@mikeg20464 жыл бұрын
Chisels typically come with some very coarsely finished edges from the box. Especially the cheapo ones. I had the same problem when I got my first chisel. What you should do is sharpen it on a regular sharpening stone until you can't see any light reflecting on the very edge of the bevel and then hone it on progressively finer grits on sandpaper sheets on MDF. Start with something like 300-400 grit and go up to about 1000-2000 grit. Then to really make it hair popping sharp, strop it on some MDF with steel polishing compound (Autosol), or chromium oxide abrasive. Cheers and good luck
@ignisking7594 жыл бұрын
@@mikeg2046 Thanks for the well thought out answer. My health actually was and is still declining from when I wrote this, so I'm afraid it's power tools only for when I'm feeling well enough to hold some thing minorly heavy. Curious though, why does everything have to be on an mdf board though, just for weight?

As a kid me and my friend made weapons in my grandpas shed. I made a wooden sword and attached nails to it that I bend 90°, so they lay flat on the swords blade. Then I sharpened a blade out of the nails with a grindstone and my mother found out about that sword when we played outside. She took it away because we were like ten and yeah it was razor sharp. 😅 I now start to imagine what weapons I could make real as joiner and craftman today. 🤔😅As there're still enough young kids around in the family, visiting my grandparents, it maybe is a bad idea. 😅🤣 By the way this sword looks really nice and cool video. 😎

Carbon fiber is not the way to go here! Its mechanical properties may good, but working with this stuff is highly dangerous. If you really dont want wood, maybe use lightweight aluminium cores (for stability) and surround it with foamboard (For safety and weight-reduction).

For that you just need higher quality wood, if you're willing to spend a little bit of money (not too much, around 10-20 USD) I'd strongly recommend getting hickory. It's a hardy and durable wood that you aren't likely to break. However, if you take this approach, I do strongly recommend making sure your tools are high quality and be sure to make sure they're sharp as well as hickory can be hard on your tools.

It's always very enjoyable to make wooden weapons, but to make it stronger I've always make the blade seperate with a tang as you would one made of steel, with the crossguard made seperate, then the hilt pegged in seperate, then a tight pommel of sorts. They usually last longer in my experiance than those made of one piece.
