Your final image with the man and dog has a very spiritual component to it. The man and dog are walking calmly into the light from dark and somewhat chaotic surroundings. Love it! Thanks for including this in today’s video.

The polarizer made a huge difference in that woodland shot, but how do you know when to apply the filter?

Wow, this video is fantastic! You perfectly showed the same conflict, I always have in the forest. There is so much content on the picture, that it very often disappointing when looking at the pictures on the screen. And starting with min 17:00 you showed the amazing pictures when the light is fitting. Key message, the "boom" pictures come with the perfect light. So thanks for sharing this, these instructions are so helpful to get more satisfaction out of my forest pictures.

Nigel, I haven't even finished watching your video (yet) because I just want to say how much I LOVE that photo with the 2 bare branches! It is stunning...I'm pretty sure I would've walked right by that one. I just love how you "see so creatively"! All of the images today are SUPERB! I'm so glad you went out and even happier that you made a video for us...thank you!

Some great conditions for shooting woodland scenes in and some beautiful images captured too. The light on the final day was epic! I'm so envious. I'm usually driving to work when I witness anything even remotely like this, with no time to stop let alone capture anything. Of course, on my days off I rarely see epic conditions, but when they do happen it makes it so special and I appreciate it even more.

Nigel, no doubt you had wonderful conditions for woodland photography and you got some lovely images. But the two images that stood out for me were the close-up of the branches curving through the frame and the one with the man and his dog. Both are quiet images that don't shout at you. They convey a calming feeling of serenity.

Hello Nigel, great conditions result in awesome photos. Nice to follow you in the woodland and take part in your emotions. Concerning the histogram: It´s always based on the jpeg file, not on the raw file. So if there´s a peeak on the right or left side (especially if it´s just for one color), don´t care about it if you photograph in raw. Greetings from Bernd

Good to see you being happy in your local woodlands scenes. Being there on the right moment, that's your message for the coming year and I will take it to heart. We had a lot of grey covered days, not inspiring to go out and the few brilliant hour there were, I had to much appointments in my agenda. But I bought a Z 105 macro lens. That in combination with my new Z6 III camera offers so much of fun playing with light and depht of field, even with the autofocus. Makes waiting on better conditions bearable. Nice Christmas days, Bert.

Love your videos. I wonder if you might explain something to me. Early on in the video you said "shooting at F8, it doesn't get better than this" and then shortly after "I wish there was more fog to give the image some depth.". There in lies my question..."Why do landscape photographers all seem to use a small aperture in their photographs?" This is particularly vexing to me for close-in woodland photography, where the "background" might be only 20 feet from the "foreground". I don't own any normal or wide angle zooms, preferring to compose with the field-of-view constraints prime lenses offer (I am admittedly weird in hamstringing myself like that). However, one of the benefits of a "prime-strategy" is wide-aperture photography becomes possible. Personally, I love the look of woodland photography that has the subject in a narrow plane of focus and most everything else is dreamy out of focus. Sort of like having a fog-machine available anytime that perfectly adjusts sharpness to the subject. I used to have 4x5 cameras that not only naturally have a narrow plane of focus due to the size of the "sensor", but also have swing and tilt motions to allow for sharpness in any narrow plane, not just those parallel to the sensor. Anyway, that's my question, "why not use wide-open apertures once in a while for woodland photography?". It might be worthwhile for you to pick up a 35 or 24 mm f1.4 lens to try out. Who knows, you could start a whole new movement I landscape photography. All the best.
