I wasnt looking for a video on how to make a walking stick, but this was the only video I could find that so well explains how to work with heated horns! Thanks a lot for this, I'll try to apply this in making horn sheets and forks/spoons etc.

@@woodlandsticks1365 thanks. Does it matter if the horn is older or does it need to be fresh? I've ground up the horn I have and there is still one crack near where the heel turns from stick to where the hand will grip the handle. And if I may ask, what are the dimensions of the thickest end? I ask so I don't leave it too thick. Currently mine is 38mm x 45mm and the section at the heel is 45mm Thanks again. 👍👍

Way late to the party, but are the horns filled with another material? All of the horns I can find available for purchase are hollow and can’t be mounted with a central screw post or even shaped in this manner. Are there fillers you can recommend?
@woodlandsticks1365
@woodlandsticks1365 2 жыл бұрын
Hi all horns have a certain amount of hollow. With the Indian water Buffalo horn they have a lot of solid on old horns. What you buy is the solid tip, the hollow has been removed. What you have is either a young horn or from another animal, so look for Water Buffalo horn. I have had a look to see who have imported into the U S and found Atlantic coral Enterprise they might help. Countries are funny about importing animal by products . Good luck Dave

Very different. You can indeed bend antler, however (and bone, elephant ivory, etc.). Soak in horse piss for a month beforehand (or alternately, distilled vinegar).

Always apply heat to side with the longest radius!
@davidpeterson3027
@davidpeterson3027 4 жыл бұрын
For materials that will stretch under heat (eg steel), you are correct. Some materials split instead of stretching so in that case the interior of the bend (“smaller radius”) must be heated instead to facilitate compression (eg aluminum, ...buffalo horn).
@revelatoryartist

I boiled a Buffalo horn for 4 hours and it barely bent at all. Seeing you boil something for 45 minutes and then you can ban I'm dead what's in that pot.
@woodlandsticks1365
@woodlandsticks1365 Жыл бұрын
The important thing is to keep it hot after the boil. Have clamps and former ready. Clamp quickly to the former, then heat with a hot air gun where you want the first bend to be. The first bend is the hardest.
