On April 5, 1860, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) climbed to the belfry of Boston's Old North Church, where almost a century earlier bells tolled the warning that the British were coming. The visit inspired him to write his classic poem that immortalized Paul Revere and the beginning of America's War of Independence. Illustrations by Charles Santore. Narration and Music Composition by Warren Oree. Musicians: Adam Faulk, piano; Greg "JuJu" Jones, drums and percussion; Warren Oree, acoustic bass.
This project accompanied the exhibition Charles Santore: Fifty Years of Art and Storytelling, the first ever retrospective of Santore, on view at Woodmere Art Museum February 17 through May 13, 2018.

This brings back a wonderful memory of my mother. She would be turning 89 but she passed a few years ago. She had to memorize this in high school. One night, while she was in the hosptial for a broken ankle, I think, about 7 years ago, it was my turn to stay with her. It was almost 1am and I was about to leave but told her I would stay if she wanted me to. We thought she had dementa fairly bad, when suddenly she started reciting this poem. I was amazed at how much of it she remembered. I didn't even know she knew it. Her mind was so alert that night, and that was such a gift. That night was such a gift.

@@i2pd The beauty of this is introducing poetry to my inner city kids - then we compared the poem to what really happened - it's a wonderful literary teaching tool for language arts and social studies and done in such a way that kids from all different backgrounds can enjoy and engage. It led to writing and stepping into the shoes of how Paul Revere might have felt. And discussion of fighting for what you believe in. Ah! A teachable moment! Never throw the baby out with the bath water just because the temperature isn't perfect! Good stuff!!!

This is brilliant, the best rendering of music and art and the written word to be heard for a long time. Kudos, fellows - you did this work, and the work of that day, honor. And we are shirttail descendants of Patrick Hendry, who was meeting in Philadelphia with the Second Continental Congress. Many thanks for this.

Paul Revere never shouted The British Are Coming! if he had shouted that he would have been shot dead within minutes.he rode from town to town to some of his fellow friends and warned them that the british were coming. Before his ride Revere warned Colonel Conant and other local Sons of Liberty about recent events in Boston and verifying that they had seen his signals in the North Church tower. Then he set off on his ride that only lasted for about 20 to 30 minutes. He rode from house to house of people who were part of the militia that the British were coming. The operation was meant to be conducted as discreetly as possible since scores of British troops were hiding out in the Massachusetts countryside. Paul Revere was captured by the regulars the British (The British were also known as the regulars). the british captured and arrested in Lexington and never made it to Concrod where he had to go. He told the British at gunpoint of the army's movement from Boston, and that British army troops would be in some danger if they approached Lexington, because of the large number of hostile militia gathered there.
