Hey Blackie, that was an interesting couple of tips! I don't carry this mess kit, but did back in 1969 in Vietnam. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Thanks for the tips! I just ordered one of these from an army surplus store "like new", I hope. Once you make the stick for the handle you can just throw it into your kit to use the next time!

Great tips. Thanks for posting them. I have to buy a new knife for my mess kit. The one that came with my kit is from 1944 and I would hate to chop it down.

Very nice tip on the handle there Blackie! Think this could be applied to another modern brand of mess kit too! Thanks and all the best!

I was brought up using the British army mess tins and they were designed to be used with food from field kitchens too, so have their limitations, with some minor adjustments the stick trick might work but I'm not sure about the knife one (sides are too steep). Thanks for the vid!!!

The great debate: What's better, stainless or aluminium?

good info I just have the kit with no utensils and its kind of a pain in the ass to lower onto a fire and to take off the fire but it heated up some beef stew just fine

Depending on the metal the kit is made of, try using a magnet to lift the lid.

In my 30 plus year Army career I don't I ever carried another piece of gear that I disliked more than the mess kit. The only time I would ever consider using one would be if I had no other options. Not sure why anyone would voluntarily carry one into the woods. There are so many better options.

because its a small compact pot that can all go in to a pack lightly
@jamesaritchie18 жыл бұрын
No, there aren't any better options. Period. If you disliked the mess kit, you either had no clue how to use it, or never actually needed it.

I spent the bulk of my Army career in the Infantry (both Light and Mechanized) and the Combat Engineers, retiring as a Brigade CSM. I served in Viet Nam in 1965/66. I am pretty sure I had more than a clue as to how to use it. Most Soldiers in Viet Nam tossed the mess kit because they were difficult to clean, bulky and noisy. Given that we mostly used C rats in the field, we opted to use the canteen cup and a plastic spoon. In base camps we used regular mess trays and/or paper plates. Sanitizing the mess kits was always an issue. We generally had a four part wash station set up with Immersion burners and GI cans. I never saw the meat pan being used to actually cook food in. The kit was designed to receive/hold food received in a serving line. As for options, there are many. A small anodized fry pan is one such option. Boy Scout mess kit is another option - shares a lot of the USGIs shortcomings but is more versatile, lighter, and cheaper.
