For the paint just clean where you need to weld. Do your first burn outside and all the paint will be gone in an hour. Thanks for sharing I'm getting ready to build one as well

An old air compressor could be used instead of a propane tank. Might find one at a scrap metal yard.

Like this one. I’ve got a 300 gallon propane tank and gonna try to heat my entire shop.

This looks nearly exactly as what I made a few years back and posted in the Internet. However I made mine modular. The door, legs and chimney flue all come off easily. The legs screw on the bottom. Also, the very ends of the bottom of each leg, I welded a stainless steel bolt, so as not to leave a rust stain on the patio floor. Grinding all of that pint off was a complete waste of time, effort and money. Simply load that stove up and burn it 2-3 times and sit back away from it. The paint disintegrates off through the burn. Then a simple wire brush or wire wheel to the surface and any residual paint magically disappears. Then wipe it down when cool and paint it. Easy. I’ve made 6 of these things. What I do now though is weld two tank end to end, making the stove longer for larger pieces of firewood. I’ve given them all away as Christmas presents to family.

I would leave the door round, or mostly round maybe cut flat on bottom to retain ash.

I'd invest in either a plasma cutter, or an oxygen acetylene torch. Mainey because so you don't have to keep cutting with a grinder. Also, the plasma cutter, and the oxygen acetylene will cut through thinner steel like butter.

I keep meaning to build something similar for a while, but my twist on it is to use a long 47KG (100lb) gas cylinder I've got stashed away, and wrap the top half of that in a welded on and baffled "hot box" of 6mm (1/4") steel, then weld on a couple of stubs of 4" pipe as an inlet and outlet, and run some semi flexible stainless flue pipe (Wrapped in insulation) off those, and into the house through a sheet of ridged foam insulation board cut to fit in an open window hole. Maybe with a 100mm 12v computer case fan and a car battery to push air through the loop? Though I'm kind of hoping having the inlet and outlet at different heights of about 2' might start a thermal syphoning effect. The reason for me intending to go down this route is that, here in the UK, heating costs (Electric AND gas) have gone through the roof in the last year. There's also worrying official talk about the possibility of rolling power cuts starting at some point in the near future to stretch out our (soon to be limited) oil and gas stockpiles. Most of our power stations are oil or gas fired here, so thats why electric might go too. There's no way I can install a wood burner IN the house, but I could easily stick one a few feet from the back door in a makeshift sheet metal and angle iron hut, and then it's just the basic logistics of getting some of that heat into my home. For fuel, at the minute, a lot of companies are still happy for people to take as many they want of the stacks of single use pallets that they end up having all over their yards, so at some point I'm going to start taking my utility trailer, my cordless reciprocating saw, and a stack of batteries to some of these places and loading half a metric ton of chopped up pallets at a time. I'm thinking that once people start getting cold, they're going to start looking into opening up their old boarded up fireplaces and THEN they'll be looking for cheap stuff to burn. So "Free to collector" stacks of pallets might become a thing of the past. Another reason why an outside wood burner and heat exchanger makes sense to me is that it can be pretty risky to burn old pallets. They can be treated with all sorts of toxic pesticides, and even when you find one's that have markings to show they haven't been treated, you've still got no way of knowing what harmful chemicals might have been spilt on them, or if they've been stood in a puddle of something dangerous in a factory. Keeping all that risk of me coughing my lungs inside out a good few feet away from the house (with a long chimney sticking above the roof line) is worth me getting a bit cold every hour or so to stuff more smashed pallet chunks into an outdoor wood burner.

What kind of paint stripper were you using? Aircraft non methylene chloride has always been great-very expensive. Open up the pours with a DA, brush it on, cover with plastic for 24 hours and it melts off like slow cooked ribs

Ya I put the tank in a big fire after I safety cut it open. It made the clean off process faster, but I definitely needed a mask.

Use tape or a marker pen. The opening cut doesn't need to be perfect if you're going to frame it afterwards.

The only problem is that the tank material is too thin. After a few uses it will rust at the bottom.

If you leave some ashes in the bottom it helps protect the the tank. I have also seen some people put sand in the bottom to help.

@@woodsarmoury i was thinking weld a square inside the door that fits fairly tight to door hole. You could make a gasket from header wrap. Brace and air tight in same step. Im building a double 55 stove today. Everything is sky high over $100 for two cement siding 4×8 panels to go behind it so I can put it close to wall of my metal building without smoking the paint off it. I dont know whays going to happen but this economy has me worried. Nice work have a great day.
