Tony Wilson as far as the career goes, there are only 3 requirements. 1) you have to enjoy it 2) you have to be good at it 3) has to make financial sense. You can’t build ALL your tools because you won’t have time to work on paying jobs. You can buy all top of the line tools because you’d go broke. You can learn to use inexpensive tools by knowing their weaknesses and work around them and that makes most sense. You can make good parts with a worn out machine. I checked and the bore is aligned with the face of the indexer. Thanks 👍🏼

A wavy washer would preload the thrust bearings and give you zero front to back play. Thank you gor posting this. I've been thinking about turning one of these into a powered workhead that I can also index with using a stepper motor. This has given me all the information I need to go ahead and try. Hopefully I get one with an accurate enough spindle to do so! Thanks again.

Great job back in the early eighties I was a tool maker in a machine shop and I tried to talk the boss into buying a suburban spin indexed but he didn't want to spend the money so he bought me a new phase 2 to replace the old one back then I think they were 30 dollars I always wanted to put tapered roller bearings in each end of the old one but never did a d never thought of flipping the spindle around all the times fighting with the guard on the surface grinder that was the best idea of this build if anyone else has ever used one then you know how nice a simple flip will be I'm retired now but still have a Cincinnati tool grinder lathe and mill now I'm going to have a flipped spin indexed thanks you do good work
@raysimon13687 ай бұрын
You done a great job on your build back about 20 years or more ago I was a tool maker used a spin fixture just like yours think it was a phase 3 anyway all I did was to buy a thrust bearing for both sides instead of one it was available off the shelf no machining but I did not think about flipping it my boss was already complaining that I took it apart and bought 10 dollars worth of upgrades to it I was wondering why you didn't put a bearing on the rear I remember it making a big difference been going to do a better job on mine now that I'm retired was going to machine both sides for a tapered roller bearing never got around to looking for the bearings but your way would be good but I prefer a bearing on each end nice job

I have used these for years and the first thing I always do with disapointment is get it on the surface plate and find the center height and then the true plane and that is where the disapoinment comes in. I bought a new one and before I can trust it I know the base has to be ground in to the true plane .

I don’t know how, after a year and a half of watching KZbin machinists, I just found your channel this evening! VERY well done, understandable, video and really liked things like the McMaster part numbers! You’ve got a new sub! I just received the exact same spindexer from Little Machine Shop today, and actually had to give it several attitude adjustments with a soft hammer to break the spinning part loose, then a good cleaning out was necessary. A nicely thought out and executed job making it very practical for your cylindrical grinding projects. It looke really good and I think motorising that will give you the consistent results that you are looking for. Hand cranking, just like running a lathe will just not look as good.( or be dimensionally stable) cheers from England!

Well, Well......just what I needed to see.....having just bought one of these on AMAZON the build quality is stated by a reviewer as abysmal, so as it was so cheap I just had to get one and then tart it up to better than new standards........I already have a dividing head but what the heck, I've got a full set of 5C collets on my Cuttermaster T&C grinder so I might as well...... too many tools makes you happier than ever. Edit.......contrary to what they say, the build quality of this indexer is very good and not the "abysmal" quality some reviewer stated. One thing I'll change and that is the ring that holds the index plate to the spindle when it gets flipped.......I'll use a split ring with a side locking screw to clamp it to the spindle.....I never liked screws pressing down on a shaft for retention. After deep consideration I won't fit the thrust bearings either........there is no thrust to cater for so a plain bronze thrust washer will be more than adequate to stop any end play.

Been a professional machinist for 40 years and in all that time I have refused to use the bolt circle function. For one, if you are doing an even number of holes the routine does not take advantage of the symmetry to minimise table movements and secondly, the only time I ever used the function like you I junked the part. I like to go back to basics and use simple trig to calculate coordinates. For a mill the Y offset is given by radius x sin of the hole's angular position and the X offset is given by radius x cos of the hole's angular position, assuming the center is 0,0. Simply apply any offset from your work piece origin to the calculated hole coordinates. Using this approach you can take advantage of the symmetry to firstly minimise the number of calculations and secondly minimise table movements. As for the spin indexer If you were to cut a vee way along with a round bar screwed to the base or use a key way and key into the base you could, in conjunction with the tee slots of the machine table eliminate the need to align the fixture for 90% of work pieces.

Very good video. Something I did to my spindexer that you might want to consider is turning it into a sine plate type thing. I added a pair of V-grooves 4" apart (I think) on the bottom side of my spindexer and added a couple of 1/2" drill rods across it. This allows me to set fairly precise angles. There is very little holding force on the magnetic chuck on my surface grinder though. I get around that by building a cage of 1-2-3 blocks to help keep it from wondering. Also have to have very light cuts.

Very nice machining, and excellent video work. Even tho it was a lot of work to re-engineer, the Harig and Suburban tools cost hundreds to thousands more. Suburban actually sells a spin indexer more or less exactly like yours, for 15 times the price. I also have one of these, used 2 times, now buried in a drawer. For what you class yourself as merely "a home shop machinist" this is a very skilfully delivered project. That is very nearly the ultimate spindexer. The only major improvement I can see here is to convert it to accept ER collets as well as the R8's. One of our UK suppliers (arceurotrade) supply there spindexer with this dual collet facility as standard. That dro issue is similar to what I experience with the Sino unit on my mill. I find if I want a set of holes around a circle pattern I have to add one extra hole. I find if I want,say,20 holes then entering 21 holes on the dro setup gives the right outcome. For a bolt pattern of six I enter 7 and all is good. I don't fully understand why but it works correct every time. I wonder if you had gone with the same 330 endcoordinate but set menu for 4 indexes would this have remedied your problem. Perhaps just give that a try and see.

Thanks so much Howard for your kind words. I think the key is to triple check everything that DRO says 😆
