Excellent idea and video Rob! I've been eyeing the plastic cutting boards in the general shop near my house for a while now... Now I know why! :) I have zero cole jaws, so I think it's time I made some. Thanks for sharing!! Yuval.

Yuval I'm thinking I'd really like to make a longworth chuck as well, I believe they are less hassle and will work better as well. Cheers mate Rob

Part of the fun of woodturning is finding solutions to tooling challenges without having to mortgage the house! The easiest way to prepare the screws is to use vinyl tubing from the hardware store. You will probably need only about a foot to do all eight screws. I have a PSI chuck with the PSI cole jaws, and needed longer screws to hold bowls that were designed with an inward curve on the outside. I found some pan-head metric screws that matched the threading in the PSI cole jaws (the screws cost more than your cutting board), but I opted to apply two layers of vinyl - one to pad out the shank of the screws, and the other to slip over the screw heads. The ID of the vinyl has to match the diameter of the screw snugly, and I couldn't find tubing that was the exact fit that I needed. So I bought tubing that was very slightly undersized, and then heated it with an old hair dryer to soften the vinyl enough to expand it over the shank of the screws. By the way, the cutting board is probably high density polyethelene. It's really handy for various things around the lathe, and its very easy to machine.

Louie Powell You are right, I like finding solutions to problems especially if I can save some money, that lets me spend it in other areas. 😉 I'm looking to replace my band saw. It most likely is HDP, I didn't even think of that when recording. Take care Rob

Rob, can you buy an extension for the headstock spindle? I have the same lathe and find the motor gets in the way, as well. Also wondering if you've thought about making a hand wheel for the headstock?

Gloria Costello There is a machine shop in town where I work, I'm going to see what it will cost to have them make me an aluminum spindle extension. Thanks for watching Rob

Just thought I'd mention that cole jaws also work in expansion mode. This will allow a slightly larger bowl to be mounted. You probably knew that but maybe not a newcomer. Also the quartering cuts would be more accurate if done while the cutting board is still square using a fence. I can't help myself...just finicky to the core. ;-D

Gil Grace Lol that is great info for all watching the video, thanks, yes I've used my smaller set in expansion mode but that only works if you have a concave lip to grab onto, it's all about design. Thanks for watching Take care Rob

When I had a grizzley lathe the motor clearance was an issue. I used washers. Two of them did the trick for me. They are much cheaper than extension bars I would think. Just get them to be a shade bigger than your arbor. Most hardware stores have them. I would bet that your could get those rubber deals from the folks that make the cole jaws. I think I saw them one time in a catalog. Thanks for the video.

Bazzman Leitch But how many threads hold your chuck on? I don't think it will cost too much to have an aluminum spindle extension made 8tpi. Cheers Rob

Glen I hope it works too, it's the kind of tool you don't use all the time and when you do it's only for a short time, up to now I've used a donut chuck that I made or I jam the bowl between a waste block and the tail stock. I'll be trying this out soon. Thanks for watching Take care Rob

I can never convince myself that purchasing or making a set of Cole jaws is worth it in either cost or set-up time. I know a lot of turners use them-and they may be the correct choice if irregular objects are being turned-but I'll take my (shop built) Longworth chuck, _q.v._, any day rather than having to change jaws and reposition all those bumpers. They're, admittedly, a bit more involved to make but considerably faster to setup; one-off turnings might not see the savings. Like your use of HDPE. Cheers, -- Joe

Joseph Scarborough I would have to agree that a longworth chuck is better and you can easily screw it on/off your spindle. Maybe a future project Thanks Rob

i made cole jaws with wood, cost an arm and a leg for the jaw plates and rubber wedges and it ended up no good as the distance between the holes which i used t nuts in were too far apart for the travel on the chuck :/ i was thinking of making them with hdpe so a bit more forgiving on the rim of the bowl and like you say the threading should be strong enough for say 500rpm removing tenons and mortises. one thing I read after buying the rubber wedges is use thin bore hose and a washer between the hose and the screw/bolt heads, compression expands the hose making a good seal and also a good thing for bowls that have a slightly warped rim, when the bowl is tight you might have atleast 2 hoses not contacting the bowl so just screw in a little tighter 👍

Hello Rob, I think the cutting boards are HDPL. Although they are rigid, mine have a tendency to wharp. I hope yours will stay straight, else youre cole jaws will be useless.
