The U.S. military long used open-air sites as makeshift waste combustion facilities. In the 21st century, these areas became known as “burn pits” and gained attention for their frequent use during the Global War on Terror. While Iraq and Afghanistan were home to some of the more recent burn pits, they are far from the only ones.
Accredited VA Disability Attorney, Lori Underwood explains how the PACT Act expanded benefits available to Burn Pit exposed veterans. In this video, there is an updated comprehensive list of Burn Pit presumptive conditions in 2023.

If you served in any of these locations and time periods, the VA has determined that you had exposure to burn pits.
On or after September 11, 2001, in any of these locations:
Afghanistan, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Uzbekistan, Yemen
OR
On or after August 2, 1990, in any of these locations:
Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, The United Arab Emirates (UAE)
(This includes the airspace above any of these locations)
